I-40 bioretention NCDOT

Hey, John Landsford, did you work on this section? We have been using
some filter basins on local and state projects - our largest in
construction now. Planning on using bio-swales and retention for a 90
acre site project coming up.

How are they performing?

Don't know a Mr. Landsford.

I was, however, the lead design engineer for the I-26 project, but not
the I-40 project.

Apparently the bioretention basin on I-40 is working well. There are
some other ones I'm more familiar with along US 74 as you approach
Fontana Lake just north of the Nantahala Gorge. They were installed
along the road to neutralize acidic runoff from some material put in
the embankment, and to remove heavy metals and oils from the runoff
before they reached the lake.

 hmmm.. a dumb question...

what are the differences between what
traditionally is called storm water
facilities and bio retention facilities?

Does the storm water have a pool or
reservoir and the bio retention not?

how do they compare in cost?

A traditional storm water retention site is really just somewhere
where the water can slow down and drop some of the silt and trash
before it gets to a live stream. A lot of shopping centers build these
now to control the runoff from their parking lots. There's one a few
miles from my house I go by regularly that is about the size of an
Olympic swimming pool, but over 20' deep.

The ones we use, however, aren't nearly that big. Those are usually
just a small hole in the ground with what's called a 'level spreader'
built around it. That's an area around the pool that is the same
elevation, so (in theory) the water doesn't concentrate but just seeps
out of the pool in all directions.

The bio retention facilities are manmade and/or natural wetlands that
the runoff is discharged into before reaching a natural stream. My
wife's firm she works for does these kinds of treatments, and are
quite complicated.
Does the storm water have a pool or>reservoir and the bio retention not?

Well, there's standing water involved with both of them, but the
retention basin usually only has a stilling basin. We put them in at
the end of drainage ditches before they reach live streams to slow
down the water and give it time to drop any impurities. They don't
remove dissolved minerals or solids or fluids mixed in the water,
though, only solids suspended in the water.
how do they compare in cost?

Stilling basins are fairly cheap, being basically just a hole in the
ground with some stone and erosion control fabric around it. Bio
retention facilities are big and expensive. I don't have prices for
them but they aren't even comparable.
