Two notes from PA-WI weekend trip

Larry Harvilla 7 March 2005 21:45:44
 (1) As part of the route through Ohio, I got off the Turnpike at Exit 81
(SR 51/Woodville) and followed SR 51 as far up as I-280. There are at
least two very strange features of this route that I'm not aware of
anybody having mentioned in the past.

To the best of my knowledge, SR 51 changes orientation (N/S or E/W) at
least THREE times along its length: it appears to be E/W from its
terminus at SR 184 (Alexis Rd.) to the East Toledo "foot" of the Anthony
Wayne Bridge, then N/S for a few blocks in East Toledo, returning to E/W
in the City of Oregon, and finally switching back to N/S from I-280 to
its terminus at US 20.

Additionally, there is a very strange, out-of-place "[51] BEGIN"
assembly bolted to a telephone pole in Genoa, at the corner of SR 51 and
Clay Center Rd.. This is nowhere near either terminus of SR 51.

(2) Along the Tri-State Tollway in Illinois, the Hinsdale Oasis is now
open. No clue how long it's been open, but it couldn't have been that
long ago -- it was still closed on my last trip up the Tri-State.

Oh 37 bounces between N/S and E/W through Central Ohio as well
Findlay to Magnetic Springs - N/S
Magnetic Springs to Granville - E/W
Granville to Lancaster - N/S
Lancaster to Malta/McConnelsville - E/W

I have a feeling that this has to do with home rule, in which state-
and U.S.-numbered routes (and in some cases Interstates) are maintained
by municipalities when the routes pass through said municipalities,
rather than by ODOT. Since Clay Center is at the northern village
limit along SR-51, it may be a really weird way of noting that ODOT
maintenance resumes there. Usually in these cases Ohio doesn't post
anything, unlike other states which may post "BEGIN STATE MAINTENANCE".
