Chicago streets

K Flynn 3 March 2005 09:01:42
I am in Chicago for a few days for work, and I am struck by the poor
condition of the roads. We have had to swerve around potholes on Lake
Shore Drive that were so huge, we could have sworn they were furnished
inside with some wall hangings. Yikes. Anybody here from Chicagoland
who can provide some insight into why this state of affairs exists?
Lake Shore is US 41 (or is it US 14? They're both there somewhere). Is
it maintained by the city or by the state?

CDOT is the agency responsible for LSD but it happens on all area
roads. Snow plowing is great for opening up car swallowing pot holes. A
few weeks back there was one large enough to close a lane on the Dan
Ryan for a day.

Potholes?
In a northeastern or midwestern City?
In March?

I've never heard of such a thing!

It's not like we have roads that aren't perfectly drained, never get
dug up for whatever-we've-decided to bury this month, don't experience
freeze/thaw cycles, don't have more traffic running over them than
their designed capacity, and not even any snowplow blades to snag on
anything that pops above the level of the roadway ;)

It might be "not like" all that, but it's also not like they don't have
access to patch and fill material either. I mean, one of these things
looked like the start of a second Grand Canyon. Haven't they ever heard
of filling them in? I don't think I've ever seen a pothole more than
two feet deep before.

Weather.

That only explains half the question, and the half we already knew to
boot. My question is, why are they allowed to remain without being
repaired particularly on such major thoroughfares as LSD?

Money? Politics?

These are the two most likely answers.

Here's another random question for people in m.t.r... I was in Chicago
a few weeks ago and I was wondering about a few oddities.

Like....

Cloverleaf interchange with US 12/45 (Mannheim Road) and I-190... ghost
grading. Was there ever a ramp there or was it never built?

Half trumpet interchange between Mannheim Road and Balmoral Ave...
Balmoral ave just ends at Jersey barriers while the ramps go to N.
Mannheim Road. I wonder if there were supposed to be flyover ramps or
something?

There's lots of nice old signage near O'Hare too. Wish I nabbed some
pictures while I was there.

The ramp that was there was moved in the late 1980s(?) when the 'new'
ORD international terminal was built. It is now a bit to the southwest,
on the opposite side of the peoplemover yard. My best guess as to why
it was moved was that it was too close to the ramps for that next
interchange to the west.

Not sure about that one.

You answered the top question, and as for the bottom one, after some
extreme google-fu I discovered a website that talks about it.

Basically known as the Balmoral Ave extension project.

http://www.cbbel.com/nonflash/projects/balmoral.htm

I guess it's to extend Balmoral Avenue and overpass Mannheim Road so
there can be direct access to O'Hare from Balmoral Ave (for convention
center traffic and easier east Rosemont access, from what I've
gathered).
