Tennessee I-65 Exit 104

H . B . Elkins 3 March 2005 00:10:34
Something interesting about Exit 104 on I-65 in Tennessee ... this exit is at
the top of a long uphill climb northbound where there is a significant
separation between the two directions of travel.

The cross road, TN 257, crosses over the northbound lanes of I-65 but passes
under the southbound lanes. This is rather unusual; anyone know anywhere else
that this phenomenon occurs?

Try the I-70/I-77 interchange near Cambridge, OH. I-77 northbound goes
under I-70 but the southbound direction goes over it.

I can't seem to recall any instances where this happens at an interchange,
but there is an overpass/underpass on I-40 about a mile east of the
Cumberland/Roane Co. Line (time zone boundary). The road goes over the
eastbound lanes and under the westbound lanes. DeLorme doesn't show a name
for this road.

I'm surprised I'm the first to mention this, but two places (at least) in
Northern VA this occurs. 1) I-95 North at Exit 169 for VA SR 644. SR 644
goes under the northbound lanes for I-95, but over the lanes for southbound
I-95. 2) The very next exit north of it. . Shirley Highway goes under the
Outer Loop of the Beltway, but over the Inner Loop.

It isn't exactly the same thing since it's a divided highway, but the
SB lanes of GA 400 at the I-285/GA 400 interchange cross over I-285
and the NB lanes cross under it.

I could have sworn there was one on I-24, also in Tennessee, between
Nashville and Chattanooga, but maybe I'm thinking of the 104 exit on
I-65 (is that north of Nashville? I can't remember without going to a
map and looking it up ;^)

Yes, it is.

ok, maybe that's the one I'm thinking of then. I remember passing one
on our yearly trip to Florida, but we only went on I-65 until Nashville,
then we took I-24 to Chattanooga.

I almost forgot! WV 114 interchange (Exit 99) with I-64/77 in Charleston,
WV, by the State Capitol. 114 goes over the SE bound lanes and under the NW
bound lanes.

I'm surprised neither you or Sherman could come up with that one.
