They'll move into whatever location would be more difficult to get out
of the lease agreement and/or whatever location was more recently
remodeled if all things are equal. At least in AZ, this would mean
that the Robinson's location at El Con mall will finally be closed,
causing the closure of JC Penney and allowing that whole complex
(except for the new stuff like the Century Theatre, Home Depot, Target,
and Krispy Kreeme) to once and for all face the wrecking ball.
Paradise Valley Mall would either see a Bloomingdale's or Nordstrom's
(the manager says that he'll be able to fill that empty location if one
of the stores is closed) wheras Scottsdale Fashion Square will
hopefully get the Bloomingdale's that everyone wanted when the Macy's
there opened.

Actually, "Walmart has been innovative and top-drawer productive in> logistics and supply chain management" is yours. Any citiations for> that?

Articles in the popular press tend to focus on predatory competition,
not the back office operations of the company. You have to go to other
places to find out anything about how they do the supply chain.

A couple of quick examples: about 10 cites in the textbook "Management
Information Systems" by O'Brien. About a dozen cites in the textbook
"Operations Now: Profitability, Processes, Performance" by Finch. Or
read any book with the words "Supply Chain Management" or similar in the
title and you'll see lots of references to the company. Most of the
cites will be about their systems for and skills in managing the supply
chain.

I just heard on the radio that Federated Dept Stores and the May> Co will merge, creating a huge department store chain.

I don't shop in the May Company store, I have a much better selection at a
cheaper price on the Internet

And the dressing rooms on the Internet are MUCH larger, too. And, ya
gotta admit, taking home your item immediately upon purchasing it is
WAY overrated! I like to wait 7-10 days to come home and find it
sitting on my front porch drenched. And the $7.95 shipping just to
receive it is much preferred over the 62 cents in gas it takes to
drive over to the store yourself. Plus, returns are a snap online,
too! No more of this take it in, return it and get a replacement on
the spot... The having to call, sit on the phone and get a return
authorization, then re-package the item, run down to the shipping place
(two miles past the mall on your right), ship it out, wait for the
credit card credit, then go back online and buy what you now hope is
the right size/color/item and start the whole process over. It's WELL
worth that 27 cent savings...

But, as always, YMMV...

Later,
Chris, the King O' Sarcasm...

Well, here in southern California, a FEDCO replaced a 1961 May Co. near
Knotts Berry Farm (Buena PK,CAL), so it was probaly obvious.Don';t
forget that in 1993 Mayco. and Robinson alreayd merged as Robinsons May
(I prefer the Mayco., confidentially)

BTW Given your last name Jack, as you any relaiton to the May Company
family?:)

Steve C.
who misses the old 1960s "May Co." department sotres...

SIR:
PLEASE DO NOT INSULT MY INTELLIGENCE. AND I WON'T INSULT YOURS.
The bottom line is that there is no place in the continental United
States more than a couple of days from the geographical center of the
country due the construction of an express highway system.

Prior to the completion of this express highway system, national
distribution systems were difficult and time consuming.

Wal Mart's national distribution system would not be possible without
the interstate highway system, neither would UPS or Fed Ex.

In the 60's, 100 miles took 3 hours, after completion of the interstate
highway system, the same distance takes half the time.

True, but irrelevant. The point is that some companies use this to
their advantage (e.g. Walmart) and others don't realize the same
advantages.
