Aack! Had a CT experience.

J 2 May 2005 05:53:28

I had an experience on this morning's commute that made me think of Carl,
and the "out-of-nowhere," scenario.

Driving along, about 50mph in the left lane on an urban street. A truck
ahead of me, in the right lane, slows to make a right turn. I hear a
squealing sound, see a puff of smoke, and the next thing I know, one of
the truck's wheels is rolling across my lane at a couple miles an hour.
It wasn't just a tire -- the whole freakin' wheel had come off, and was
upright, slowly rolling perpendicular to my lane. I slam on the brakes,
but there's no way I'm going to slow from 50-0 in 20 feet. I make a
habit of keeping an escape route open. I dodge to the right, missing
the tire by a foot. I was probably going 35(?) when I passed it. That
would've left a pretty big mark on my bumper. Heck, maybe I even
avoided injury -- the tire could've flipped up over my hood and gone
through my driver's side windshield. My S2000 is a pretty low vehicle,
and that was a pretty huge wheel.

Had I been in my truck, I couldn't have dodged it. Then again, my truck
could have probably plowed over the tire without much damage.

Funny enough, this was the exact same location where a goose kamikazeed
across my windshield, spiderwebbing the whole thing, a couple years ago.

Not quite a CT moment. In a CT story there would have been no truck in front
of you. The wheel would have appeared out of thin air.

No warning noise either.

Pull over, watch the wheel/tire package until it came to rest, and
quietly say "oh, <expletive deleted> <expletive deleted> <expletive
deleted> <blasphemy deleted> <expletive deleted>" until it was
determined that nobody was going to get seriously fux0red.

well, that's what I would have done, anyway. Those things are heavier
than they look, the rims are really a lot beefier than the ones on your
chevy. There's a lot of kinetic energy to dissipate when one of those
things lets go at any appreciable speed - and even a rim/tire from a
little Japanese shitbox can do a lot of damage when hit.

And you would have spun out into the weeds.

Are you sure you're not thinking of Lloyd and his Llounger?

I don't know. He completed his turn, but there were buildings present
that prevented me from seeing if he stopped, or continued on his way.
Likewise, I turned off that road a couple blocks later.
When I went by the same location this morning, there wasn't any sign of
the wheel anywhere.

Kept right on driving, of course! After all, he has 17 more where that
came from, and besides, it would be "unsafe" to run out into traffic
to try to retrieve it (at least, that's the excuse Truckers give when
you ask them why they don't remove their "Alligators" from the road).

I believe the reason truck trailers are built with those double wheels
in the first place is to enable this behavior. If the truck can keep
going after losing a tire, then it doesn't really need the extra wheel
to support its load -- but if it didn't have it, the driver would have
to (gasp!) stop and change the tire.

Which would imact his impossibly tight schedule and bring the economy
crumbling down around us...
