One time, I was behind a delivery truck where one of the doors on the
back wasn't quite closed. When I saw it open, I switch lanes, came
beside the truck and used my horn to get his attention. Then I pointed
at him and at the rear of the truck.

He then pulled over and I drove on.

Carry a CB in your car. If by chance the vehicle that you're trying to
communicate with also has a CB, there's your answer.

A few months ago on a run from Sydney to Canberra (Aus) I was behind a
truck that lost a large plastic sheet off the back of it. I saw that it
was about to loose another one, so I pulled along side the truck, waved
my CB mic at the driver and told him what was happening, he said thanks,
and pulled over straight away.

If the other vehicle doesn't have a CB, all you can do is flash your
lights really, maybe pull along side them wind your passenger side
window down, indicate to them that you want them to wind their's down,
then tell them what's wrong with the car. That's a bit of a hassle though.
