SUV Driver Shot

Scott en Aztln 22 April 2005 18:37:30
KTLA reports that someone in a purple sedan shot the driver of a black
SUV, seriously wounding him. Witnesses say the motive may have been an
improper lane change on the part of the SUV driver.

This is the third freeway shooting incident in the LA area in recent
days. Maybe with all the publicity people will start paying a little
better attention to their driving...

You can't be serious... You realize you're rationalizing attempted
murder. Nobody deserves to get shot, even if they are the worst driver in
the world. Maybe they deserve a ticket, but not a bullet.

It's pretty chilling because it shows people are flying off the handle
more and more. I think Americans are becomming decidedly less good natured,
which used to be a national trait. Perhaps it's due to a coarsening of our
culture and media, or to a certain anomie, lawlessness, as our political and
economic life withers away into idiotic jingoism, sloganism filled with
sound bites and cliches, cronyism and greed (MFFY?).

Judy? You think it doesn't deserve to be shot?

And people only have a finite tolerance to garbage. Eventually someone will
cut them off and they will be shot.

You're making it way too complex. I think we're just getting REALLY sick of
lousy drivers getting in our way. "Good natured" doesn't mean "Sure, I'll be
happy to bend over."

This coming from a guy who endorses the torching of Hummers.

Good point - I'm not crying very many tears for the SUV driver, but it
was wrong to shoot him.

It's time to review ouw traffic laws and keep assholes and vigilantes
alike off the fucking roads and in prison.

If that means toughening the DL tests, so be it.

If those assholes can't figure out how to use public transportation,
the Darwin help us!

Let them eat cake or starve. Down with welfare!

Obviously people are getting fed up with MFFY drivers.

Naw--she'll just shoot it. That'll teach that inconsiderate tree to jump
out and bite cars.

I don't like people who drive SUV's/4x4's when they don't need one, and
I don't like drivers who pull improper lane changes no matter what
vehicle they are driving. However shooting someone for not changing
lanes properly is ridiculous. The person who shot the SUV driver should
go to prison for attempted murder and nothing less.

We are only human, and no matter how good a driver is they are bound to
make a mistake once in a while. That doesn't give anyone else the right
to shoot anyone.

I enjoy reading most of your posts about idiot drivers, however I can't
say I agree with you on this one.

How about people who drive Corvettes? Or Ferraris? Or any
high powered, gas guzzling. over priced European or Japanese
or American "luxury" and/or "performance" car? People don't
need these and they definitely suck gas and often encourage
dangerous and aggressive driving. I have often been cut off
by three pointed star driving jerks. So, I guess it is OK if
I don't like people who drive Mercedes, since no one needs
one. Ditto for all Lexus, Acura, BMW, Lincoln, Cadillac,
Porsche, etc., drivers...... I suppose you only like Honda
Civic drivers (and maybe Corrolla and Focus drivers). Or
maybe only Prius drivers qualify for your approval.

BMVs or Corvettes or Mercs dont block my view of the road, dont turn
in intersections and 10 miles an hour, dont cruise in the left
lane, dont have long stopping distances, etc.
OK?

What, exactly, are you disagreeing with? My speculation that drivers
might start paying a little better attention to their driving? You may
be interested to know that the one of the drivers that the KTLA
interviewed in relation to this morning's report about the shooting in
Tustin specifically mentioned that he would try to be more careful.

I take offense to that statement. There is nothing about a car - any
car - that encourages dangerous and aggressive driving. It's all in
the drivers.

So you support drivers shooting handguns on roadways as an effective method
of traffic control, even if they kill someone?

Scott, you are right on the money with this. The best car in the world > can't help a lousy driver. >

Sure it will(help,not cure;nothing is perfect);
it will increase the safety margins available;have a lower tendency to lose
control,or roll over, and stop better. And have less of an impact on others
if it does collide with someone.(like having a standard bumper height,so it
will not ride over the other vehicle)

Putting a marginal driver in a marginal vehicle(SUV) increases the chances
for "incidents".

BS. If you haven't seen Mercedes driving 10 mph and/or
cruising in the left lane you aren't looking. As for braking
distances, you are taking about a difference (60 to 0) of
less than 6%. According to Consumer Reports, BMWs and
Mercedes have stopping distances from 60 of 127 to 136 feet.
An Explorer Sport Trac had a stopping distance of 138 feet.
Just changing to better tires could reduce that to the same
as your expensive German cars. Even the worst SUV listed,
The Dodge Durango, only took 155 feet and I'll bet with
proper tires, you could get that under 140. For the most
part, SUVs are similar to other domestic cars listed be
Consumer Reports. If short stopping distances are important,
both the 350Z and RX-8 crushed any of the over priced German
yachts. And you must think Civic drivers have X-Ray Vision
if you think they can see past 7 Series BMWs and S-Class
Mercedes.

You don't like SUVs - fine don't buy one. I am tired of
people who don't like them demonizing them for all sort of
ridiculous reasons. If you don't like them because they suck
gas, fine, say that, but don't give "performance" cars that
suck just as much gas a free ride. If you think SUVs are too
big, fine, but be sure to gripe about large cars and
mini-vans as well. Exactly what car does meet your approval?
I assume it must be smaller than yours so you can see over
it, have better brakes than yours so it won't ram you in the
rear, slower than yours so you can out run it, and cheaper
than yours, you you can feel superior. Did I miss anything?
