Speed bumps

Magnulus 18 March 2005 14:14:05
Does anybody really like these things?

A local university has about 4 of these on one road to the entrance.
Sure, the road is curvy, but isn't that what common sense is for, and if you
drive fast over them, well, maybe you deserve to crash. OTOH, driving over
the bumps produces a loud thud and jolt, even at 5 mph. Maybe I should send
a bill for new shocks to these idiots. And they also have speed bumps in
parking lots at shopping centers, but at least its more understandable since
there are pedestrians around, and hey, they've been worn down a little with
time so they aren't totally annoying.

The university is also wierd in that it has a roundabout of sorts in front
of it, but unlike a "true" roundabout, you aren't allowed to circle around
completely, it has a "no passing" mark on the entrance and no real left turn
is possible from the entrance (it's basicly a 3 way intersection), and
apparrently people use it more as a pickup point. My guess is they think
it's all neato traffic calming, but it's very annoying to drive through it
because its all so purposeless.

I hate it when you get somewhere and there are a ton of unexpected
speed bumps. For example, the gym I got to has a ton of speed bumps in
the parking lot, for no reason, and it drives me crazy that I have to
hit them every time I want to work out.

They are quite fun to jump on my XL-600. If they weren't there I'd go a lot
slower.

Sounds like me and those trailer thingies the police put up that show your
speed and flash stroke lights if you exceed 5 over the limit. I'll but
putzing along but when I see one of those I downshift and floor it. It's
kind of a game to see how fast I cna get up to by the time I reach it. :)

Those speed monitors always show me as going about 3-4 mph slower than
my spedometer does. I always wondered why exactly this was.

Ride with a GPS in your car and you'll find the manufacturer has probably
calibrated your speedo on the low side.

No. Even most people who request that speed bumps be installed in their
own neighborhoods based on a misperceived safety benefit quickly tire of
them.

The street right outside my office leads into a residential area with
speed bumps.

Oddly enough, there are breaks in the speed bumps, that are just
perfect for avoiding them if you straddle the center line (usually
possible since traffic is light on this street).

Here's an attempt to draw an ASCII picture of it (Not to Scale):
____ ____________ _____ _________ _____
curb \__/ BUMP \__/ BUMP \__/ BUMP \__/ curb
Center
Line

So, as long as you don't have a car that's too low to the ground, you
can cruise down the center of the street (traffic allowing) and can
avoid the speed bumps.

The only explanation I can come up with for them being like that is
the fact that there is an ambulance "station" (?) next to our office
building and they didn't want to slow down the ambulances.

I'd guess that this probably allows about 80% of other vehicles to do
the same thing though.

I wouldn't mind if they all disappeared tomorrow.

Speed bumps often cause crashes when drivers go out of their way to
avoid them.

A good reason not to have speed bumps. Air dams save on gas. Speed
bumps don't.

They do it for legal reasons. In the US, they do it so you won't sue the
car manufacturer for a ticket. In Germany and Europe, OTOH, it's the law
that a speedometer may not under-report the speed, but it can over-report
it- I believe the same is tru eof some places in the US. The trip gauges,
OTOH, are usually accurate in the cars.

Those speed monitors always show me as going about 3-4 mph slower than> my spedometer does. I always wondered why exactly this was.

Before electronic speedometers (at least the more modern ones), speedometers
were driven by a gear on teh side of the transmission interfacing with a
gear on a cable, and the cable drove the speedometer. Depending on the ratio
of the cars rear end the speedometer cable would need different numbers of
teeth on the gear to keep teh speedometer cable spinning at the correct RPM
for a given speed so the speedometer would read accurate. Generally you can
not get the speedometer dead on using this type of setup, so you have a
choice that will have the speedometer read slightly high than teh actual
speed, or slightly lower. The manufacturer will normally choose the gear
that reads slightly higher than the actual speed so there is no liability
issue for speeding tickets. That is to say, if your speedometer reads 65 and
you are actually traveling at 62 MPH, no big deal. However, if your
speedometer reads 65 MHP and you are actually doing 68 MPH, there is the
possibility of problems with the law. Of course in this example, 3 MPH over
the limit is virtually unheard of to be stopped for, but I'm sure you get
the idea. Keep in mind that a speedometer that is inaccurate by a small
amount at a lower speed will be inaccurate by a larger amount at a higher
speed.

If people are so worried about speeding, I think they should just install
an automatic speed camera and a sign there. OTOH, a speed bump penalizes
people driving lawfully as well as speeders.

Another annoying thing: white lines on the edges of streets. They have
these in my neighborhood now, and on a few streets. The "narrow" look is
suppossed to be "calming" and force you to slow down. Yeah right, it just
makes me nervous. I just remind myself that the curb, not the line, is the
demarcation, and then I procede to drive a tire right over them, hopefully
rubbing them out one of these days.

I like roundabouts but for an entirely different reason- because I hate
red lights and stopping and idling forever (the thought of all that fuel
going to waste, especially with oil topping $58 per barrel). Unfortunately,
most Americans will have to become alot better drivers to ever figure them
out. They had a roundabout built in nearby Clearwater, Florida and one
woman said "I hate the thing. I'm used to only having to look forward when
I drive. Now they expect us to look to the side". LMAO. No wonder there
are so many sucky drivers around here, and so many T-bone crashes. If you
don't look both ways at an intersection, #$%t happens.

Traffic calming is all well and good, but if it's designed to screw with
a driver who is conducting himself in a lawful manner, I don't like it.

I don't know of any state that requires a POV to have a speedometer,
much less an accurate one.
Do you?

Join the club. I have the same experience in my Camaro, and my air dam
is now angled backwards because of it. Time to get the heatgun and bend
it into shape when it gets warmer...
I wouldn't mind if they all disappeared tomorrow.

Nervousness is the intended result. But it's a novelty effect. When
people get used to the lines, they won't be nervous and they'll speed
back up. Worse, when they encounter the real danger the white lines
are mimicking, they'll probably be desentsitized to it.

All these traffic engineers and developers around here are sucking eggs.
The corner coming out of my neighborhood is partially obstructed by bushes,
and between that and the white lines, I'm ticked off. And noobdy lifts a

I checked their site (I'm interested) and it appears the unlimited local
calling is only part of the $25 plan - is this the case, or are you
grandfathered in?

If this is too OT, please send email.

BTW, you may want to rethink publicly admitting to file sharing.
