Check your local laws. In some states it is illegal to have your car
sitting while idling when no one is in it.

many of these states recognize that remote starters are different, and
exempt them. However, I'd bet not all of them do, so check with the
local law enforcement people. They can tell you if there is a law, and
if it is enforced, and if enforced how and why... I suspect that if
you told them that it was an autostarter, and the cannot be moved
until the key is in the ignition, they will be happy with it.

But as James say, check to be sure.

I know of several cases where people left their car running, and the> car was stolen, and the owner was totally liable for all the criminal> hurt, and the property damage he created.

Would not be possible with a car running via remote start. As soon as
someone entered the still locked car and tried to put it in gear, the engine
would quit. It's no more "stealable" than any other parked car. It might
be more tempting being nice and warm, though ;)

A car left with the keys in it running is an invitation to theft. Part of a
cops job is to prevent thefts. That is why he would be interested.

Those would be rather silly laws. Some car models come from the factory > with remote start capability.>

The merit of the law is a separate subject (and I agree debatable). I was
merely informing the Op that those laws do exist in some states and that he
should be aware of them before installing such a device.

Actually the remote start is a $150 option on the base
models (and not even available on the very bottom line
model). The remote starter is standard on the LT models -
but then that is already about a $5000 adder. A $24,000
vehicle is not cheap (MSRP on the LT is over $24,500).

This may be an effective way of determining if it's illegal and if
they will hassle you - if you live in Mayberry and Andy's still
sherrif.

I wouldn't count on anything a cop told me regarding the law

I don't see why it should be illegal for a slush box. Manual
transmission is another story though, there was a case here where
someone left his car in gear while it was off, then remote-started
it and ran over a pregnant woman (luckily she survived without
serious injury).

I have such a setup and have never managed to leave it
in gear while turned off, but of course I can't vouch for
the lack of sensibility in the rest of the population.

I'd rather have more than just the parking brake to hold the car in
place when it's parked.

My sister has a 1995 Pontiac Grand Prix.
If she uses the remote starter, the radiator fans quit working.
This has happened twice.
The first time she took it to the dealer and they charged her $195.00 to fix it.
It has happened again and she hasn't fixed it yet.
Any suggestions......I know.......don't use the remote.

As in it quits working even after she has had the key in and is driving normally?

I don't think one of the ACC wires is getting power, check the relays for the remote start.

Any remote start I have installed or worked on provides power in
parallel with the ignition switch, so if the relay goes bad it just
doesn't work - and has no effect on operation with the ignition
switch. Now, if it has an immobilizer module installed, it's a
different story - the immobilizer relay can fail intermittently open.
Thing is, generally the immobilizer only opens the ignition circuit,
not the accessory or auxilliary power circuit, so it still does not
make sense.

Yes, it just stops working.
It must burn out something.
She is looking for the last repair slip so I can see exactly what they did
to fix it last time.

 Joe...

The remote start has nothing to do with the fan not working.

The remote start is not connected to the fan. When the car
remote starts, the 'remote start brain' activates relays that
energize the cars wiring at the key cylinder. Its the same
as you putting in your key and turning it, only remotely.

Stop blaming something you don't understand.
Take it back to the shop and have them replace the defective
part they installed.

They could have completely cut one of the ACC power wires, thats why I was
asking.

If they had completely cut one of the ACC power wires, the
car would have multiple failures. One ACC wire has several
power accessories connected to it. Not just one fan motor.

Some installers like to look smarter than they really are, and make a
complicated installation when a simple one is better. Some remote
start units have several extra relay control circuits, and these
"rocket scientists" think they have to use them. They'll put a N.O.
relay into a circuit that gets energized by the remote starter, as
well as by the ignition switch. This setup is SUPPOSED to be used as
an immobilizer -but try to tell that to some of these hotshots.

I am thinking about putting a remote starter in my 2005 dakota, problem
is the one I got is aftermarket (from another vehicle...I took it off
and am reinstalling on this one). I can't decide if, to save the
warranty on the electrical system from being voided, I should buy a new
mopar branded one, or just wait and install this one after 3 yr/36000
miles. Has anyone used the mopar remote starter? From what I can tell
it does not include Keyless entry or alarm features which I also want
to add.

Any suggestions or advice about the Mopar starter or if I should wait
or not is appreciated. Thank you

Also, Has anyone had any really hard times with Dodge's electrical
systems?

 Hi Kevin,
You don't say what the remote starter is off of, or do you know what it
will work on? Anyway bad Idea for the 2005, or any model that has a "Pass Key
or Chip", because you will need to mount an extra pass key near the ignition
for the remote start to work. And yes, it will VOID your warranty if the
technician decides that the remote start is what caused a problem.
