Car dealership need my title on trade-in?

Dontdamnme 79 20 February 2005 09:49:59
Does a car dealership want the actual physical title to a vehicle on a
trade-in or do they just copy it for proof and obtain their own title
and you take the original home? Also, is it common for dealerships to
mail you the title on a used car you just bought from them? I'm new to
all this and I'm getting all the facts. Thanks.

They need your original title.

The dealership doesn't mail the new title to you - the DMV does.

For the new car, the dealership will mail you the paperwork you need to take >to the DMV to register the car in your name and get your license plate.

Not in California. The dealership takes all the fees, fills out all
the paperwork, and the DMV sends you your license plates and
registration in the mail.

No, they don't.

Hmm... According to the CA DMV website, the seller MUST sign over the
title to the buyer, and the signed title is given to the DMV so that a
new title may be issued in the buyer's name. How can this take place
without the seller leaving the signed title with the buyer? Also, of
what possible use is the title to the seller once the car has been
sold? What would be the point in keeping it?

yes, they need the title. I don't know about them giving you a title after
you buy a used car. I never bought a used car from a dealer. I know that
if I was in a trade and buy situation, I would get everything in writing first
and I would not give them title to my trade in until I got the title to the
used car I bought.

Of course! How can you sign the car over to the dealer in trade if you
don't have the title?

You give the dealer a power of attorney to handle replacing
a lost title and sign the appropriate (for your locality)
forms. Been there, done that.

Dodge? Try again.

OK, I will:

Of what possible use is the title to the seller once the car has been
sold?

What would be the point in the seller keeping the title?

Probably depends on the state.

Last time, neither bothered to send me the title and I didn't notice
until I needed it to register it in another state.

None. But you are making the assumption that the seller *has* the>>>piece of paper.>>
It's not an assumption. The OP clearly stated that he has it.

No. The OP clearly states that he doesn't have the title.
<<The reason I asked the original question was because my state never
sent me my title certificate when I transferred my car here. I only
have the application and a temp registration card. The dealership
wants to charge me $50 to obtain a title on the car.>>
