Google for "flash flag." The idea is to have your flag to about the width of your handlebars to give a more visible indication of your width to passing motorists.
This is tangential, but it does relate to territory and safety...
Years ago while cycling to work at some ungodly early and dark hour, I approached one of those yellow flashing lights that are typically found on top of orange barrels in construction zones. The flashing light was on the far right side of the road, and since I wasn't in a construction zone, I figured it was a pothole or an obstruction, so I started to drift left to give the area a wide berth.
When I got closer, I realized that I was approaching a fellow cycle commuter who had duct-taped one of the warning lights to the rack on the back of his bike. I asked him why he had taped the light to his bike, not realizing that my own actions had already answered my question.
