Hitting deer with sports car?

Guest 8 February 2005 03:15:48
How dangerous is it to hit a dear with a low ground clearance sports
car compared to a normal height car? My biggest fear is the animal
coming right through the windshield. Is this a legitamate concern? My
car is 2000 Toyota Celica GT. I suppose there are other cars that have
it much worse like a miata?!

Also what about bigger animals like elk etc?

Thx!

I tagged a deer at slow speed in my NSX. Small dent on front fender,
took out the windshield.
Also what about bigger animals like elk etc?

Some friends of mine had just gotten on WA SR 410, going about 45.
Elk ended up *IN* the front seat, came out when driver braked.

Years ago I tagged a deer in an Eagle Talon. Only the popup headlights
being in the raised position kept the animal off the hood.

A coworker driving an identical car had a similar incident. This one,
though, was with the lights in the recessed position. The deer ended
up in the back seat. Literally. She took some photos of it. Blood
everywhere. Very ugly.

this sounds very dangerous. What if it landed in the drivers seat? What
kind of injury could the driver expect?

Thx!

People have been killed when this happens.

In just about any size car, a full-grown deer will go right through the
windshield. To prevent it you would need a "roll cage" extending up over
the windshield. I've never seen this & doubt it would be street legal.

Of course, a really small sports car like the MG Midget has been known to
go right between the legs of a moose & out the other side. Saw this on
America's Funniest Home Videos.

DO NOT hit the deer. Learn to drive slower in areas where there are
likely going to be deer. Learn to drive FOR CONDITIONS. Some people
seem to think that they can drive with their foot to the floor all the
time and then wonder why they hit a deer. I live in a rural area, and
see hundreds of deer on the roads. I have never hit one.

It's too bad that deer cant sue people. Imagine the mate of the deer
you just killed suing you for destroying their family..... Imagine
having to pay child support for all the offspring, and having to pay
the mate a few million for pain and suffering. Or, if the deer that
you hit survives, you'd have one whoping vet bill, and may have to pay
for the care of a handicapped deer for the rest of it's life.

Once again, learn how to drive FOR CONDITIONS, and you wont damage
your car by hitting a deer, and you wont inflict pain on an animal who
is only doing what deer have done since the beginning of time. If you
are incapable of doing this, please ONLY drive your car in the city on
the interstate freeways that are surrounded by concrete barrier walls
and ten foot or taller fencing.
