Tires don't blow out anymore. You've had a slow leak for the last week
or two and you didn't know it and eventually the rim got down to the
tire and that's when all hell broke loose.

I lost pressure rapidly in a rear tire and didn't realize it until I
got home, despite driving 50 MPH on the way. My car has low profile
tires and a heavy front weight bias. I heard a sound but figured
since my car didn't do anything it wasn't a tire going flat. The
mechanic found a big gash in the tire. Same thing happened a few
months later. When I hit a pothole and blew a front tire I noticed
that right away.

P.S. to "Laura": Because I was speeding looking for some kids to
murder I was too distracted to realize that having a flat meant
I was supposed to crash. Sorry, I'll be more psychopathic next time.

I had it happen _while_ braking fairly hard. Can you say spin? At least
you had some warning.

Just then, I thought, "Oh no, I blew a tire..."

Had you been driving properly as shown on "wildest police chase videos",
you'd know you simply FLOOR IT! Nothing seems to stop those people -even no
rubber on the rims whatsoever - until they run a red light and smash into
another car.

Best one I've seen yet was where the guy on the rice-rocket ran the red
light and plowed into the side of a commuter bus.

That reminds me of this classic:

I'm not sure if I ran over something... it's possible. right next to
where my car came to a stop was a ski broken in half. probably had
fallen off someone's ski rack. (grrr.)

I thought that MAYBE I had run over the ski and that it got caught in
the wheel well and dragged along with me. but, I would assume that if
that had happened, I would have heard something clanging around back
there.

I don't know. everything happened so fast; it's hard to say.

thanks, everyone, for sharing your experiences and thoughts.

There is all sorts of crap on the road. One day right when I was changing
lanes I noticed something but couldn't avoid it. After hitting it I kept
hearing a clanging under the car. I pull over and it's a toyota lug
wrench stuck in the underside of the plastic trim.....

Bicycling I've found interesting items as well. I have craftsman 1/2"
wrench with a 6 sided looped end that I found.

Twice, at ~85MPH. Both in Mitsubish Galants (two different cars). Both
with original equipment Bridgestone tires, H rated and properly inflated.
On both cars, the tires had about 20K of wear on them, and had been wearing
evenly up to that point, with plenty of tread left. Both tires failed
suddenly, with no warning at all. As both blew at about 85MPH, I suspect it
was a design defect in the tire. (supposedly H rated, remember)

Both times were a non-event. I never came close to losing control. I
instinctively slowed down before I was even sure what had happened. Both
times I was able to drive the car off the road so that the tire could be
changed. -Dave

Lay off the scrape; you might find your perception of reality to be
more accurate, moron.

nah, best one is cops are chasing this guy, he comes to a red light, you
hear WHOMP!!! WHOMP!!! of an air horn, and an 18 wheeler collects the car
solidly as it runs the red light.

2 fatalities.

You're breaking the law by driving 85, but you blame it on a design
defect???

I disagree. I believe the correct statement is to not step on the
brake. Applying gentle pressure does not cause a problem.

The same as any other emergency which you should be prepared for.
Good drivers handle them, the bad ones, well, that is what Darwin is
all about.

Hell yeah. Eventually everyone does.

Firestone can be spelled with an F or a B.

I would suggest that you do research on what H rating means, but I
suspect you are as incapable of that as you are of driving.

I use to drive for a car service and I had a tire blow on a early 80's
Cadillac Sedan DeVille. The steering felt funny seconds before the tire
blew. When it blew, there was no drama. The car did pull to the side with
the blown tire, but not to the point where I couldn't steer to keep the car
in my lane until I could safely pull onto the should to change the tire.
I must have been doing about 50mph at the time. Not a big deal. Just
inconvenient to change a tire when you are wearing a suit.
