In fact, tailgaters drive me crazy. In my younger, angrier days, I
slammed
on my brakes to jolt a tailgater off my tail. Today, I ease off the
accelerator and slow down until the offender gets the hint. As they go
by, I
toss them a friendly wave as well.

I do the same thing. The more you tailgate me, the more i slow down.

Horseshit. It gets easier to alternate and delay *nobody* further back
from the lane's end. If people were to start moving out of the ending lane
back at "LANE ENDS 2mi", there'd be far fewer people bunched up and
needing to yield to one another at "LANE ENDS 1/4mi" and "LANE ENDS MERGE
LEFT".

No biggie; I'll just zoom on ahead, and someone else will let me in
early. :)

Tailgating suck but it also sucks when you're doing your nice 65-70 and
some idiot:
1) is doing 50 in the left lane and NO MATTER WHAT, the idiot will not
yield to you. I miss driving in Germany...
2) same as above, only the idiot moves into your lane
3) the idiot makes a great effort to pass you on the right, gets in
front of you and slows down.

BTW, pennies and torn ketchup packets do wonders on tailgaters. Just
make sure your car is faster than their car, just in case.

Perhaps you would pick up fewer tailgaters if you started obeying the
law and quit blocking the passing lane?

That's pretty much my approach: from the first warning sign onwards,
slow down smoothly, select a "fair" gap in the next lane as I reach
its speed, hold station alongside the gap, and slip over as my lane
ends.

The guy at the back of the gap generally seems to appreciate that I
have prevented him from being overtaken by some number of pushy
blighters - and I've seen quite a few pushy blighters settle for
taking their turn further back.

And if someone up ahead slows or brakes(which happens all the time),your
gap is gone. Then you become another last-minute merger, and require an
enabler to let you in.>

Really?

I've never noticed that as a significant problem.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that when someone up
ahead *does* slow a bit more than usual my position allows me to
see it long before the "chain reaction" reaches the gap next to me.
