I had a 1997 GC ES.
In 2001 they wanted to replacethe BCM due to various odd behaviors; I
opted to trade in the car instead.

In those four years I experienced fluttering interior lights, door
chimes, instrument lights flickering and phantom windshield wiping
behaviors.

The clockpspring and turn signal lever were both replaced.
The dimmer switch for the dashboard lights everntually shorted and
acually emitted a bit of smoke on two occasions.

As you are dealing with instrument light problems currently, I would try
replacing the dimmer knob (resistor) and tracing the ground wires for it
and re-securing.

Following that, there might be a relay/fusible link/fuse. Failing all
those options it would seem to indeed be the BCM.

Good luck.

Btw, I traded the '97 for a 2002 and was very happy with the advances.
I had a short in a ABS wheel sensor, but otherwise have been [mostly]
problem free for 60,000 miles -- and it will soon be paid off!

Please excuse my ignorance, but is what you mean by BCM the computer module?
