 That's strange...

I bought my copy at Fry's Electronics in Phoenix last Saturday
(4/16/2005). Just happened to see it on the shelf and picked it right
up.

What did I get? The British version? Is there a British version?
Do I need to return it and get the new US version?

hmmm could this be a violation of import/export laws? Who knows. I
certainly don't.
From what I have read, and that is not a guarentee, there will be NO
difference between the two versions. There could be some minor content
variation like you may get the Simbin Ovals included with the USA disk,
while owners of the Brit disk may have to dload instead. But the
functionality of the two programs 'should' be identical.

We'd have to get Eden or some of the other Simbin connected simmers to
chime in and verify this.

I for one have been waiting for this release for a long time. I don't even
know if I will have the time needed to really dig into the sim properly.
But the fact that Simbin share our roots, they are simmers, and modders and
grown up kids just like us. I have heard they still have some of the ISI
problems that all the ISI coded sims seem to share, but I also have heard
they have stepped beyond the limits of the orignal code by a goodly margin.

My poor weary depleted checkbook is standing by,

I'd far rather give back to those who have been amongst us than some
faceless crew of code monkeys.

What little I have had time to try GTR.... I find the most frustrating
to be finding the right tweak for my TSW. I use an Audigy2 ZS game
port and just haven't found a good setting. My setup works perfect on
Papy sims.

You have to hand it to Papy.. they still seemed to have had the best
in game controller setup and calibrate routine.

And, with my limited experience, the GTR online play has a way to go
yet. Pray for a patch.

I haven't tried all the cars yet, but the little Lotus GT3 is tons of
fun to drive. When my TSW is "just right".

I would think Viva Media would have its name somewhere on the box if it's an
official U.S. release - they're the new element. I've never heard of them,
but they're apparently a well-known publisher of children's titles (like
"Fritz 8," a chess game). From their site:

"Viva Media, LLC is a privately owned New York company dedicated to
publishing a wide array of interactive content of the highest standards. The
company's collection of more than 40 multimedia titles tout more than 35
awards for excellence in publishing."

C'mon, Gary, nobody but pre-Jurassic trogdolytes uses a game port anymore.
Contact TSW in re a USB conversion kit.

Well, Gary has an Audigy ZS, so he isn't a total Luddite. Maybe he could
spring for a clean one-owner ver of SE, only used on weekends.

The only "names" on the box are Atari, Simbin and 10Tacle Studios.

So I guess Fry's somehow got the Euro version?

Like I said, I just happened to see it on the shelf and was a little
surprised. But I haven't kept up a close watch on the GTR world so I
just thought "here it is, I'll grab it".

 LOL!
Well, I had an old Rockfire USB/Gameport converter that I was using
before. Finally just gave up on it. The gameport has MUCH better
precision control than does the Rockfire, at least in Papy sims like
NR2003 and GPL. I actually bought (recently) the Audigy FOR it's
gameport. The old SoundBlaster Live was giving WindowsXP fits.

But, I would certainly entertain the idea of installing the new TSW
USB kit if I was certain it performed better than the Rockfire and at
least as well as the gameport.

I've only been back in sims a few months now after about a 3 year
layoff. Then I was running 98SE and using gameports and sometimes the
Rockfire. WindowsXP seems to be a little more finicky about the
gameports so I realize I am a fossil in this regard.

I miss my old PDPI L4 digital game port. Now THAT was precision!
Alas, only if ISA slots still walked with us trogs :)

I kept my PDPI for years (up to and including a 1.3-GHz Athlon mobo), but it
doesn't work w. XP, so...poof! I have a Momo Force (red) w. TSW pedals (the
Momo pedals bolt right onto the stalks!), all USB. Works like crazy!

There have been rumors that the International (American) release would
contain a) a 1.4 patch (the Fry's copy oughtta have at least 1.3), b) the
oval-track pack, or c) both. No confirmation that I've seen.
