 Is there a setting I missed?

I just ran Atlanta for instance, and half way through the race there
was an accident (and I was involved of course :-)­ and the race results
screen was immediately displayed and the race was over! There were
many laps left to race! My car seemed fine.

Also the cars only go out of view in this "sim" (no spectacular
crashes like in NR2003).

I really need to learn how to stay in line though :-)­ Seems harder
compared to NR2003.
