who here was part of Hawaii?

Tim Y 10 March 2005 21:29:05
Hard to believe its been 10 years since my first online racing
experience. I was wondering how many old-timers that still follow
this group were testers on Hawaii? A show of hands and handles.
I went by MR.V

I don't remember a lot about how the service worked, but I do remember the

I remember fondly somebody, who was lucky to be in the local area nearby the
Papy design group, therefore being able to race all day without a large
phone bill. I think he ended up helping them testing. Anyway, with today's
phone plans it would surely had been different. You can get specific
numbers for unlimited hours, at charges much less than the exhorbitants
bills (in the thousands per month) some people had.

Nowhere except local LANs have the quality of racing been equal to it.

I think I started on Hawaii in Mar-Apr 96' as naman. Are you talking about
the beta of the beta?.

Heh, $300 was a baby crack habit ;) I doubled that every month for 5-6
months. Nearly $4k in all but dam if it wasnt worth every penny. Online
racing has never been the same imo. I was only the un-touching middle man
between HP payroll and Pacific Bell Phone Co accts recievables for awhile,
heh.

TEN seemed a much more disconnected experience than Hawaii, on the pickup
racing side anyway. Watching leaders/winner from the lobby was fun in
itself. Running against Huggins is still the same too ;) <== notice the
wink Bob.

Every time I mention an online race to my better half, the first thing from
her mouth is "is it long distance?" LOL.

Those were good times...the community was a lot closer back then. I
remember hanging out in the Compuserve forums and hearing about it. I was
there the first night it went public. I ran in a bunch of leagues ringing
up $900 phone bills. I didn't care...it was a blast. My ID was sbycroft.
I ran in Late Night with Dave, SSCA BGN, CUP, and Sunday Nights, NRH, and
SASCAR.

"No passing in the tri!!!" LOL!!!

I tried it a few times until the phone bill came, then my Dad almost killed
me, rofl!! That was back in my keyboard days too, got a Thrustmaster T2
shortly after that and still use it as we speak.

I was on it just a couple times. I was too cheap to do it a lot. The
guy that ran our league still lived with his parents and ran up a
phone bill in the hundreds of dollars for just one month.

After that, he disappeared from view. :)

Here...

Who would have thought, back then, that online racing would be no further
along than it is today?

Well, perhaps I should clarify. I have not raced online in well over a year,
let's say no further than what I perceive it to be today.

Yeah...Late Night with Dave was a great league. I think we ran in SSCA too.

had to give it up...

Raced a few times on Hawaii. I had a son in college and a new house and just
couldn't afford the phone bills. Think about it, those were dialup days.
Good quality racing but sometimes intense. I haven't really got back into
the online scene much since. I finally have half-decent dsl and am thinking
about getting back into it if there is anyone out there who would take an
old "newbie" and help him through the ropes.

I guess the current state of on-line racing is about where I thought it
would be. I didn't think the community would be as scattered though. Back
in the day everyone would be meet on Hawaii, Compuserve, or TEN. A central
meeting place is probably the thing the community needs the most to get it
back to where it used to be. There are still some good leagues out there
and broadband is finally available to most people...even CW Webster is using
broadband now...lol. I thought Papyrus would keep making Nascar and Indycar
games forever...obviously that didn't happen.

I was a tester but could not actually get the connection working,
there was some technical problem (can't remember what).

Aaaahh Hawaii - what memories! I raced in the IVGA Last chance league
with "legends" likke Joe Farr, Nim Cross, Earl Setser etc... (where are
they now?)

My biggest problem was a that I was on international calling rate (!!) And
when a $650+ phonebill "suddenly" surfaced - I had to drop out... (Boy was
my old man pissed!!)

I still think TEN was the best experience there has been since Hawaii. They
had ratings that actually told you something.

Sierra's are useless, and NSR doesn't even have any I can find (though they
were trumpeted in some of the interviews I read).

It's getting along quite well... I'm in the latter stages of preparing the
shell - and then it's of to the painter for a respray.

Also been busy preparing a Mini Marcos for a "customer" aswell as helping
Matt out with his car. He took 4 class wins from 4 starts last season -
although competition was "petite" to say the least.. Highlight of the season
was the last race when his prays for rain finally paid off - was such a
blast watching him "kill" Mustangs in the wet ending with a well deserved
5th overall.

Oh well - seems like things are pretty dull in the virtual-world so it looks
like we picked the right time to convert back into real size cars :o)

Any big news I've missed? (Like Racing Legends having been released (sorry
'couldnt help it!) or big announcements from the ex-Papy guys at FIRST?)

Glad to hear it Ed.

As far as virtual cars go I just received GTR today. To me GTR is on par
with GPL and nearly the best thing since sliced bread ;)

Seriously though, we finally get something for the hardcore simmer and all
we hear is "its the same as F1C" which imo is a load of bs. Yet in the
next sentence the same guys say how great NSR "WILL BE WITH A PATCH" and
that no one cheats in NR2003... go figure...

What happened to the good ole days when roof riders were ridiculed and aids
users were cheaters and true sims (as GTR) were glorified as gifts from
heaven ;)
