85 RX-7 12A Power Loss

John 2 April 2005 06:57:17
 Hi everyone,
My 85 RX-7 12A 5spd has a problem that I'm having a hard time
troubleshooting. A few minutes after I start to drive the car on a cold
and/or wet day, the engine loses power. It can't even sustain 50MPH on the
highway. The engine runs okay (it sometimes bucks a little), but it lacks
power. When this happens, I usually pull off the road, and the car idles
just fine on the side of the road. After a minute or two of idling, the car
usually runs fine for the rest of my trip.

Any thoughts? The problem has gone on for several years, but now it is
annoying me enought that I want to fix it. I have already replaced both
ignition coils, swapped ignitors, and replaced the spark plugs.

Thanks for your help.

John

You change the wires John?...I had two RX-7's, An 83 and an 85,
they had very high voltage ignition systems and gave a lotta
grief whenever it was damp...I'd go through a puddle and the
damned engine'd take a snooze...I finally carried a can of
WD-40...spray the wires and it'd catch and run fine...WD-40 will
burn so be careful...another problem that I had was dirty fuel
filter...musta got some dirty gas cause it'd plug the fuel filter
every now and then...good luck, fun little car when they're
working good...

You change the wires John?

Isn't there a dual distributor in that setup? If new wires doesn't
fix it, replace the distributor cap. Condensation can make it more
likely to arc along internal lines left carbonized by prior arcing.

I don't think there's two Robert, I had two RX-7's and I can't
remember for sure (has two coils though). I do remember fixing it
when it quit on the road (very damp cold day) and wouldn't
start...I washed out the dist. cap with WD-40, a rag and a
screwdriver...started instantly and ran fine for months after. So
your tip is likely a good one. The ignition voltage is very high
in those, they're very hard on ignition components.

I don't think the RX7s ever had the twin dizzy engine.

True, the twin distributors last appeared in the 10A and 12A engines found
in some RX-2 and RX-3 models. IIRC the 12A twin distributor was last seen in
RX-2's (had one myself on a "top starter" engine). Last 10A I rebuilt was
sold to a guy to go into his RX-3.

Funny thing with those top starters is that the latest engines still have
the hole in the rear plate today. Well, I know it was true for the rx7s but
I'm not certain about the rx8s. I'd be interested to know mazdas reasoning
behind this, maybe it's for racing?

What stops them bolting up, is it the flywheel is in a different spot?

Hairspray also does an excellent job of temporarily 'sealing' wires.

Any progress with this yet, John?

So if I relocate the huge amount of crap off the top of the engine, cut a
hole in the bellhousing and space out the flywheel it should bolt straight
up. :-)

Don't think so. I vaguely recall the bellhousing also having a raised
section for the starter snout....

You could try to go top starter but I don't see the point. While you're at
it you could also go twin distributor and gear driven oil pump....don't
forget the dual side seals for authenticity.

I've had conditions like this occur when baffles were letting go in the
muffler and clogging the exhaust. Easy enough -if you can get it loose
and shake it, you'll have your answer pretty fast.

My guess is either that or a vacuum leak.

luck,
david

I had an 85 RX-7 new and also an 83 new, I found that the
ignition was very susceptible to wet and had occasionally exactly
the same problem...carry a can of WD-40 and blast the wires now
and then, you might wash out the dist.caps with it too...
