Now I see that I should be looking at the oil pressure gauge to decide> when the engine is sufficiently warm for wide-open throttle.

It took me a while to beat the bushes and get an answer on this from
someone who does know. Sorry about the delay (and holy spam attack!)

My question:
-------
I've got what I hope is a short question for you.

When a rotary is started cold, the eccentric shaft bypass valve is
extended, opening the relief passages and preventing enough pressure
from building to spray oil from the cooler jets. In this state, is oil
reaching the shaft bearings? Or more simply, is anything getting
lubricated (sufficiently) before the valve closes the relief passages?
--------

The reply:
-------
Actually, when cold, the pellet is in it's short mode - the tip is
retracted.

When it heats up, it extends and plugs up one or two bypass holes in the
e-shaft.

There is minimal oil pressure going to the rotor bearings at this point.

I can't give you a number in terms of oil pressure at the bearings when
cold, but I find it unnecessary.
--------

Looking at the s4 FSM after seeing your post, I quickly found my
mistake. Engine oil travels from the oil filter to the e-shaft at the
rear (I had it in my head that oil entered the shaft at the head) and
then travels up the shaft to the tip, where the bypass valve is (as
you've pointed out.) I talked to my friend above (RETed at rx7club.com,
for those who are wondering) b/c I wanted to be clear about what the oil
is doing while things are cold.

So you win my lunch, dude. ;)
