Disc Brake Conversion

Gravity 18 March 2005 00:38:01
I am kicking around the idea of doing a disc brake conversion on my '66
pontiac lemans. I was wondering if this is something that I can do on
my own (I am handy but have not done my own brakes, and wouldnt want to
kill myself or anyone else due to faulty installation of the brakes).

There are many different kits available and many of them claim to
"contain everything you need to convert from drum brakes to disc
brakes".

Anyone have experience with these conversion kits (particularly
Stainless Steel Brakes)?

Any comments are appreciated. Thanks.

I did this to my '66 Mustang with a SSBC kit. It
really is a "bolt on", no difficult fabrication is
needed. But that doesn't mean it's easy.
You do have to fab and flare your own brake lines.
If you can't flare, you can make a couple of trips to
the parts store and buy pre-flared lines in various
lengths. But you have to bend them yourself, and you
need a special (inexpensive) tool to do that. And a
little practice.
Getting the old parts off can be tough. They've
been on there a long time. My car is essentially rust
free. But I still had to cut some small things off.

Brake lines should always be double flared to prevent leaks. There's a
lot of pressure in those lines.

I used a Wilwood setup on my Cobra. I fabricated all the lines out of hard
stainless from Inline Tube and used braided stainless from the chassis to
the caliper. The actual disks are 11" from a Granada (front) and an
Explorer (rear). I bought a Rigid flaring tool with the double flare dies.

Those mid-size GM cars were actually available with disc brakes, so if
you can locate Disc-brake type spindles and hubs at a junk-yard, it
would be a bolt-in. For sake of safety, you should probably by new
calipers and rotors.

Yo can also fit spindle/brake assembly from a -70:s camaro/firebird, or
other rwd GM car from the 70:s, but due to slightly different (larger)
dimensions, the swap may/may not involve some fabrication.

A internet search might give some further suggestions.
