Tow Rope and First Aid Kit.

It's not always a mechanical breakdown you have to deal with.

Small tool box containing basic tools, duct tape, cable ties, bits of
fuel pipe, etc.
Foot pump.
Tow rope.
Spare wheel.
Wheel brace.
Trolley jack (smallish cheapo one in it's own plastic case).
Complete spare distributer with correctly set points.
Spare Stromberg carb diaphragm.
Oil.
Water.
Brake fluid.
A spare fuse (lives in the fuse box with the other two).
Sponge (handy for bailing if/when rain gets in).
Walking boots.
Hat.
And a shovel if it looks like snow.

In case you're wondering, the car's 36 years old and benefits from a bit
of weight over the rear wheels.

 The message <memo.20050504160915.3580B@admin.vlaad.co.uk>
from agree2pay4uce@spam.vlaad.co.uk (Paul Cummins) contains these words:
Tow Rope and First Aid Kit.

Tow poles are better. Though mine's had to be modified 'cos the
Montego's rear lashing eye wasn't suitable being too high up under the
bumper. So I welded a tow coupling to the end of the pole and jolly good
it is, too.

Except word's got around the neighbours and I keep having to rescue them.

My Vitesse doesn't have towing eyes, front or back, so a pole's not much
good for me. I did borrow a towing pole once and found it a bit fiddly
to set up, so for a real emergency when the priority is to get the car
out of traffic as quick as possible, I'd prefer a rope with proper D
shaped shackles on the ends.
Incidentally, despite its age the Vitesse has always been the one doing
the towing so far. I hope that's not tempting fate too much...

How about a torch in case you have to use some of the above at night?

Yup, I forgot about that, I keep an LED one in the glovebox.

I did once have to change a wheel on an old Viva in pitch dark entirely
by touch and managed in about the time it would have taken me in
daylight. Being employed as a darkroom technician may have helped there.

A few feet of fencing wire.
Invaluable. Especially if you run an older car.

Yup.
I got some funny looks pull starting my wife's fully ladened Passat
estate with it once when the starter had failed, but it hauled away as
though there was nothing there.

Yes - right first time - give that man a prize!!

I've nowhere to put it all, so it all lives in a locked box bolted to the

I got some funny looks from my cousin in his Citroen AX 1.4Diesel......
I was towing him from the M6 back to Blackpool after it blew yet another
head gasket.
Anyway, we had just set off, turned round, up the sliproad and onto the
motorway.
I was very tired, forgot I was towing, pushed to right pedal to the
floor. looked behind and one of the front wheels of the citroen was off
the floor as we had tied it to the towbar.

Afterwards my cousin commented that he had never got the car to go that
fast on it's own engine.

Those volvo 960 3litre 24Valve engines can seriously tow!!!

It's perceived as faster, as well. I towed a friend's husband home
considerably slower than he would usually drive down that road - and he
reckoned I was going far faster than he would.

thats megga overkill, the extra fuel to pull it all around.
Some scroat would be quids in if they broke in there.
It must be unreliable, your journey to work is a 500 mile daily drive or you
have no garden shed :)
I've got wheelchanging gear, maybe a screwdriver and a pair of vise grips,
in my old Landrover (1985).
