Lacquer lifting in big flakes on bonnet, please help!!

Rotelitasitis 17 April 2005 17:27:15
Hi, New to this group and have found some great tips from threads on
it already, my first question though is that The clearcoat lacquer is
lifting in ugly flaking patches on my bonnet, the rest of the car is
immaculate, i bought the car second hand and the previous owner said
it was vandalised overnight and he thinks brake fluid or something
similar was poured over it.
My question is, can i use a cutting compound or cutter like t-cut, to
cut off all the lacquer on the bonnet, then wax and seal the freshly
revealed paint underneath?
Unfortunately i cannot afford a respray at the minute, so any hints or
tips would be greatly appreciated.
The car in question is a 94 import toyota mr2 in bright solid red with
a clear lacquer coat finish.

Thankyou

Andy...

You'll need something harder than cutting compound to remove the laquer.
1200 wet & dry paper should do it, used wet. Then you need to spray a
coat of laquer over it, but on something as large as a bonnet you'll
need a spraygun to do it with. A lot of people report good results with
the Earlex airless sprayguns, which would be a lot cheaper than a
respray and you will have the tools for future use too.

As regards cutting compound, do yourself a favour and get the "real
thing" from your local refinishing supplier - Farecla G3, or G10 for
finishing.
