Smoke of new brakes

Stewart Devereux 13 April 2005 21:49:43
Today had a new set of front discs and pads fitted to my Ford Focus 1.8 TDDI
at national Tyres. Got home 40 miles, and smoke coming from both sets of
front discs/pads . Took about 5 mins to stop. Discs slightly black. Would
this be normal with new pads - what caused it ?or should I worry and take
them back and ask for replacements?? Help?

Not at all.
what caused it ?

They've messed up with the fitting.
or should I worry and take> them back and ask for replacements?? Help?

I'm not sure I'd really want to drive it actually.

Take it back. Driving carefully. :-)
Sounds like the pads may be cooked. Usually caused by using cheap
aftermarket pads. Do you know what make pads were fitted?
Unless you know what you're doing, my advice is to always fit genuine pads.
In any case it's still down to National Tyres to sort out.

Can you elaborate please. Cooked? like how, what?
What deficiency do cheapie replacement pads have?
What do genuine pads have that t'others do not, etc?

Ask there questions 'cos I had a helluva problem with binding disc
brakes on a Suzuki. Locked up the wheel!!

The presence of smoke, suggests the brakes are overheating, and the pads are
burning. Burning produces carbon, which on the surface of the pad, results
in almost a total loss of brakes.

Manufacturers design braking system as a package. Disc material, matching
brake pad material for optimum performance etc.
Aftermarket pads may be made of a different material. Maybe giving better
braking, at the expense of increased disc wear. Working better at higher
temperature etc.
There's usually nothing wrong with pattern pads from a reputable
manufacturer.
There's every chance that they'll be as good a the OE ones.
OTOH, you could be taking a chance with an obscure cheaper make, that may
not be compatible with the disc material, which could 'cook' under heavy
braking.

More likely to be a mechanical problem IMO.
Sticking caliper, snatching pads etc. I doubt the pad material is
responsible.
Mike.

No it's not normal. Sounds like the calipers have seized.
