Out of date tax disc

Sergeant Bilko 5 May 2005 02:09:37
Car driven badly in Kirkby today, by what looks like a bit of a slapper.

When she parked up I saw that her Renault Megane S746 KFR had a tax disc
that ran out on 30th April.

Hope the slapper gets an automatic £80 fine!

Is that likely for only a 4 day expiry? By the look of her it would do her a
favour to have to spend her money on fines than chav-wear!

It's quite possible she has either just forgotten about it, or gotten a
new disc and not put it in the car yet. Did you tell her that her tax
had expired? Not that forgetting to renew it is really an excuse.

There is a Ford Ka parked around the back of our flat that has a tax
disc that expired in September 2002 (or 2003, can't remember)

They still use the car as occasionally it disappears for a few days.

When 2004 changed to 2005, the tax disc changed and we thought that
they'd actually renewed their tax. No, they'd just found an old expired
disc of theirs that was a similar colour to a 2005 disc and put that in
the window instead.

We're reluctant to tell the police/DVLA about it because they seem like
the sort of people that you wouldn't want to bump into in a dark alley,
and even though the chances of us being fingered as the culprit are
slim we don't want to take the chance. They'll get caught by an ANPR
eventually, I'm sure.

Cheers,
GazChap.

Care to provide a reference to that statement.

Cheers,>GazChap.

You could just ask someone at random to do the actual reporting. Plenty of
people would be happy to tip off the filth, as to where they can find the car
and leave it up to them to go check the disc. Not like the prosecution depends
on the word of the witness, except the part where they can't have them for
driving it as well unless they catch them in the act.

Can't the council just clamp it and a few days later, take it away to be
scrapped? Chances are the registered address is nothing to do with the driver
so ANPR isn't going to help anyone.

Currently I think the situation is that it is an offence not to have a > valid> tax displayed if the car is used or kept on a public road.

The offence is known as "failing to display excise". Funny thing is, if you
drive an untaxed car, get pulled by the feds, do a runner and park in a
private place...they can't charge you with the afore mentioned.

Without a tax disk one could say its not roadworthy

One would also be incredibly wrong. The presence (or lack of) of a legit tax
disc does not prove or disprove how mechanically roadworthy the vehicle is.

Or just not having the vehicle registered in your name. There are ways>around it, but, as with speed cameras they'd rather catch the majority than>the few hard-core law-breakers.

No point chasing bad debts when there are plenty of punters who will
roll over and pay up, I suppose.

No, but they can charge you with failing to stop, plus any offences you > commit in the process of doing a runner - speeding, dangerous driving, > what-ever.

Yes - that I'm well aware of. I was mearly stating the point.

You can report it online at

anonymously. Or complete a witness statement yourself.

Exactly, I took my Golf for an MOT today, and it passed, without a tax disc!

There's an car dealer across the road from me with about 200 cars without
tax disks, all of them brand new cars.
