Engine flush and AirCon Clean

Ben Wilkinson 3 May 2005 15:44:14
I have just booked my 12 month old Ford Focus into a main dealer for an
annual service.

They also tried to sell me an "engine flush" (to clean out all the old oil
before putting in the new), and a "bacterial clean" on my air conditioning
unit.

Both are about £30 each. Any advice on whether it's worth bothering with
these, or are they a rip off.

Air con clean can be done yourself - aerosol spray (around £10) is
used to spray into air intake while fan is on full whack - fairly easy
to do on most cars.

I've heard mixed opinions on whether a flush is a good thing for an
engine or not - mostly with older cars it's definately not.

Engine flush can be had for about a fiver in Halfords. I've used it in
the past, but I'm gonna stop using it. There have been some bad
stories about it, and it may not make much (if any) difference. In the
days of mineral oils I think sludge could've been more of a problem,
but semi-synth is better, and fully synth is even better still. More
frequent oil changes will also help clear the rubbish out of the engine.

Do the aircon antibacterial flush yourself, should you need it, my 5yr old
Focus hasnt needed it- its more important to change the pollen filter. If
there is no nasty smell from the aircon then its fine.

The oil flush certainly isnt needed. Change the oil at 6 month intervals
(taking note of the national tyres promotions everyso-often- oil and filter
for 20quid, and you wont need anything else.

If you change your oil run a few miles then change it again you will clear
far more residue and not risk having flushing oil mixed in for the next six
months and save most of your £30 unless of course you use synth or have a
RangeRover sized sump

Oh, yes. I see your point. But do you really need it for a car that is
only 1 year old??

AirCon disinfectant is useful if the aircon is smelly or has not been
used for a while but yours should be fine. £30 is a good profit margin
- I wish I could get that! If you do need it, buy one from Halfrauds.

With regards oil flush, I wouldn't worry if you are using a proper
quality oil (which a main dealer should be) and changing it on time.

That's something that's worrying me a bit. There will certainly be
some flushing oil in my oil. There was about 800ml that didn't get
emptied in my oil change, which will mean that 20% of my oil was a
flush/oil mix. I was wondering whether that might be why my car's been
using oil.

Where is it using oil?

I don't mean which town, I mean whereabouts is the oil coming out of the oil
chambers?

1) drips out onto the road / drive, either all the time or just when hot and
running.

2) produces black smoke through the exhaust and there is oil in the inlet
ducting where the breather comes through

3) produces an oil mist when going along.

This type of thing.

A worn engine will leak combustion gas into the crankcase, it circulates
through the breather and enters the engine with the fuel, to be burned away. If
this is what your engine is doing, it is probably somewhat worn out. Mind you,
it'll keep trucking on blowing black smoke for as long as you care to keep
filling up the oil, it'll just get gradually worse and worse.

If you're worried, I'd ask your dad ;-)

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember petermcmillan_uk@yahoo.com saying
something like:

It's all that pinking that does it.
