The ford retro range of cars

Sor 2 May 2005 05:26:58
A while ago ford uk where predicting a bleak future .

What if , They introduced a range of retro cars like the MK2 RS2000 /
MK3 cortina 2000E / 2.8i capri / etc etc .

Even a mint restored version of a car isnt the same as getting one thats
brand spanking new .

As well as the nostalgia buyers - there also seems to be a percentage of
people who dont like all the space shuttle technology in modern cars .

Working on the assumption there would be a percentage of buyers and
guaranteed sales - wouldnt it just be a matter of finding out what that
percentage would be .

Is it also safe to assume that ford have never actually asked the
question and even they dont know if a retro range of cars would be a
success or failure .

I've owned examples of all of the above, and loved 'em all.

Nissan did it in California a couple of years ago. They bought and restored
about 1000 240Zs, restored them back to "as new" original specification -
but with unleaded heads on the early ones. Left the mileage alone, but
they're quite sought after. Believe they cost around $15000 or thereabouts.
About the same as a new Mustang.>

I'd love a new car with retro styling along the lines of a Mk1 Capri with
the wide arches from a racing one. The 4.6 V8 from the Mustang / Town Car /
Rover 75 would be a bonus.

Like several other users on here I would imagine .

Perhaps a newsgroup full of car geeks isnt the best place to ask the
question :-)

Then they would not meet any emissions or crash test standards and could not
be sold.

I'd pay new Ka money for a new RS2000, wouldn't you?

Surely it'd cost no more than £7k? There'll still be a warehouse somewhere
full of Pinto engines, and apart from the seats, everything else is pretty
bloody basic.
Middlebridge springs to mind as a case-in-point.

Ah, but Middlebridge made Scimitars. The "real ale and a beard, please"
fraternity were always going to want a "genuine" Reliant instead of a
properly made one.

I'd hope RS2000s, for example, would attract people around my age who just
want to drive something seriously amusing for a while, instead of the
concours crew that just want to measure the shiny qualities of the screws
holding the washer bottle in; "They're not genuine German screws those,
mate. I'm afraid your car can't stay in the owners club"

Yep, that would be a good way to kill off the company. Have you ever
driven any of the above? Because most of them were shite and even the
ones that weren't shite are now shite by comparison with modern cars.

Ford do make "retro" cars but they sensibly make sure that they aren't
that retro.

They may not like it, but much is forced upon the makers by regulations.
Emissions, crash tests, etc.

Yep rose tinted glasses and nostalgia - the fact is these cars weren't
that good, except maybe the RS2000...I do like the look of 70's cars though
:-)

Nissan did some sort of retro 60's thing with a 3-cylinder turbo motor - saw
one at a classic car show yesterday. Figaro, thats it...Based on a micra.

Loads of them if you look around, Mitsuoka Viewt and Ryoga, Nissan
Figaro (probably the best of the bunch IMO) are the best known but there
are several small companies in Japan that turn out relatively impressive
pastiches of 1960s cars. The major difference being that the new ones
are reliable, comfortable and cheap to run.

Ford did produce a retro car - it was called the Sierra. Well, the
underpinnings were pretty retro, anyway.

You could import a Hindustan Ambassador or Contessa from India for some real
'retro' motoring.

Years ago when top gear was more interested in cars than ego wanking the
presenters - chris goffy (?) did a road test on the ambassador and if
memory serves he gave it a reasonable review .

Having driven a Hindustan [1], that only backs up my view that Top Gear is
much better than it used to be.

[1] Some lunatic student who used to valet cars for us bought a new one. [2]
