who's responsible for a vehicle if buyer gives a fake address?

Boosbeck. Alex 30 April 2005 00:22:55
Hi folks. I've got an old '91 mk 4 Escort van I want to get rid
of as cheap as possible. It's not really worth me spending any
time and money on, as it'll only be worth say £150 at max if I
get it MOT'd etc, but it has 4 good tyres on it, and is
fundamentally solid.

Question is, if somebody decided to take it off me for nothing,
and the V5 was sent back with a fake name and an address that
doesn't exist, and said vehicle was then found abandoned jacked
up on bricks, would I still be responsible for it?

Alex.

No. As long as you sent the log book off, signed by the new keeper,
straight away then there shouldn't be any comeback on you.

If there are any future problems, you may need to write to the DVLA at a
later date to confirm that you're no longer the owner, mentioning the date
you got rid of it, and you should be absolved of any responsibility.

But the price of scrap metal's quite good at the moment, and you'd be best
off just weighing it in, and keeping the wheels and tyres.

Oh you're one of those cunts who abandon cars and pollute the
countryside I live in?

Yebbut not everyone seems to have noticed that.
I just bought a Nissan Micra with 40 quids worth of tax on, for 30 quid!

It had a "major gearbox fault" - you could only select odd numbered
gears. Half an hour after getting it home, I'd jacked the engine back
into it's correct position, replaced a missing bolt from the engine
mount and hey presto, all working properly.

Heh, I used to live in North Lanarkshire, as soon as you get 2 or 3
minutes out of anywhere populated, some bugger has dumped and torched at
least 1 car in a layby. I moved to Aberdeenshire about 5 years ago, I
saw my first abandoned burned out car here yesterday.
