Fuel panic, again!!

Icedog 23 April 2005 00:18:23
The Fuel Lobby are to call for blockades on 3/5. So everyone goes out and
panic buys, giving the Gov't more money- a self-fulfilling foot shooter
methinks.

Tony.

Eh? If it's fuel they were going to burn anyway it makes no difference.

AFAICS, they will be giving New Labour some jolly bad publicity just before the
election, and also some advance money to the tax pot for whoever wins the
election to use on our behalf, which might not be New Labour (I hope it isn't,
but I'm stymied as to who ought to be in their place).

As I only fill my car once every three weeks or so it will not affect me at
all.

Just be careful saying that in public, or it'll last four weeks just to
spite you!

They're only giving the government more money if they don't use the petrol> that they buy, aren't they?>
If they use it then they would have had to have bought it at some point.>
Would you rather have some crayons to colour in while the grown-ups talk?>
Thanks for the offer.Won't your therapist mind if you haven't got them for
the next session?

Many purchasers don't use the fuel immediately, just panic and squabble and
store
excess amounts all over the place in illegal receptacles.
It matters not to me as I fill up once a
month, but some will be sorely vexed.

i think what he is trying to say is that a LOT more people will buy a
lot of fuel in a short space of time and some even if they dont
particularly need it, but just because they panic and think the world
is going to run dry of petrol...

its kinda like getting your whole years salary in one month....

BUT also then after this when the obvious happens and petrol doesnt run
out, everyone continues to buy petrol normally, so the government has
received an extra boost of tax income due to the panic buyin, which imo
is excatly what was being said in the opening post,

But why should it result in using any more fuel? Unless the extra is stored
away somewhere (to be thrown away later when it oes off), all that will
happen is that the peak caused by panic buying will be followed by a slight
drop while all those people don't need to fill up as their tanks are full
don't buy anything.

The 'extra boost in tax income' will be followed by a compensatory drop in
tax income, and it'll all average out to make no difference.

(unless of course panic buying involves driving hundreds of miles to get
fuel. Although this is obviously silly, I wouldn't put it past people...)

cheers,
clive

Eh?

That doesn't make sense.

If I normally buy petrol on a Friday and it lasts me for a week, goodo.
Lets say I bought fuel last Friday and then today (Wednesday) a fuel protest
starts, so I go out and buy fuel. Near as dammit half a tank. Then there's
no fuel crisis.

If I buy petrol on Friday I buy half a tank...

If I don't buy fuel on Friday I'll need it by Wednesday...

Net result? No extra fuel bought... No extra tax...
