poss changing a Pug 106 for a Mazda MX5....

Loopy Livernose 21 April 2005 00:45:35
 Hi all

thinking of changing my pug 106 (1.1) for a Mazda MX5 1.8 (brand new UK
model)

apart from needing to change career into a hairdresser.. what should I be
checking out.. what will my base model 106 have over the MX 5 (if
anything).

TIA

Loopy

A roof.

TBH, I haven't a *clue* what you mean... If you mean in terms of "toys",
the brochure will tell you. If you mean in terms of how it'll drive, the
test drive will tell you.

The Mazda's RWD, so you'll need to learn to drive. And going from a 1.1 Pug
to a 1.8 MX5 is going to be a pretty big jump in terms of how fast it goes.
I went from a 1.3 Ka to a 1.4 Volvo (about the same speed), then to a 1.8
Mondeo. That seemed impossibly fast for a few weeks. Then I got a 1.8 Golf
GTi 16V. That seemed impossibly fast for a long while again.

Going from a 1.1 to a 1.8 is going to seem mad fast. Like I said, learn to
drive ;).

The biggest differences you will notice between the 106 and the MX5
(besides the obvious lack of roof) is the fact that the MX5 is rear
wheel drive and it has much firmer suspension and therefore body roll.

You should also be aware that the MX5 is being replaced by a
completely new model later this year (the current model is effectively
15 years old, with a few minor tweaks along the way). In normal
circumstances that might mean there would be some bargins on the
current model later in the year, though in this case this might not
happen due to the loss of production last year when there was a fire
at the factory.

The new MX5 has a slightly different look to the past ones:

Yep, that'll be a change from the existing one...

I'm six foot two. I always fit into my MX5 better at the end of the
day, once my spine has compressed a little during the day...

I'm 6'2", too. I moved my neighbour's (late first shape) MX5 once (with the
roof on). I had to get out on my hands & knees. I'm hardly a racing snake,
but I'm not THAT lardy!

ill have to pay attention to this issue then, I'm only 5'11, but I'm not
stick thin.. (id not like to say bad things about meself, but I ate all
the pies! lol)

its a dream that has the potential to become a reality.. so even if its
just for 3 years, ill have realised my 2 seater roadster dream (then its
sights on the Bentley continental!!).

having checked my paperwork, I'm about 11 months premature, so will be
aiming at the new model (I likes it) looks like they are dropping the 1.6
and making the 1.8 the bottom rung, so might look into the 2L.. anyone
know if this engine is used in other cars (I did a brief looksee, but
couldn't find much).

ooh and rear wheel drive I was told would make VERY little difference in a
car like this.. (but I live to learn..) and have driven RWD b4 (tail happy
Marina's and Viva's) but that twas a few years ago.. (omg now this sounds
like a mid life crisis car!!)

oh and car prior to the pug was a nice tweaked Mitsubishi Carisma GDI (gave
an sti "it needs a service though mate" a run for its money on the
twisties). so the Mazda does sort of put me back in line with that and the
pug is the change of power etc.. (prob why I hunger the power back).

Thanks for all comments so far...

Loopy

Like all cars of this ilk it takes a bit of practice getting in and
out. I don't have to resort to getting on my hands and knees
anymore...

If you think an MX5 is hard to get in/out of you should try the car
that I plan to build, an Ultima GTR. This is a shot of me doing my
back in while getting into one:

If you are a typical driver just pootling round town in good weather
then RWD will feel little different to FWD.

However if you like driving fast then it feels and reacts very
differently to a FWD hatchback.

Also on snow/ice or if you are being ham fisted in the wet then if you
aren't prepared for the back end to become frisky then someone used to
an underpowered FWD is likely to be surprised by what the car does. If
you have driven RWD before then you will understand what I mean.
