Mazda Xedos 6 sport manual dilema

Oderaro 14 April 2005 05:14:42
 Hello all :-)
Not sure what is best to do about my mazda.
Car has 160k on the clock, needs a timing belt at 162k, also needs
immediate replacement of sticking front brake calipers, brake discs and a
full service!
Been offered £475 for the car , bought for £900 3 years ago; does anyone
know if this car is worth fixing or should I just take the money?

Oh! engine is still ok no probs except ticking noise when cold.
Any ideas appreciated..

Thanks all

This is the problem with bangernomics! The price of repairs can easily
outweigh the value of the car. Then there's the "better the devil you
know" side to it. Of course, the car could also be on the verge of
becoming a money pit. You just don't know.

To be offered what you have been offered what with the necessary work,
I'd be tempted to sell.

How much is it going to cost to get some new calipers, discs and a full
service including cambelt? Are there any other signs that the car is
about to become a money pit?

I've never owned a car that cost more than a grand and the longest I've
owned one car for is 18 months. I get bored and sell them on if they
start to show too much trouble. So if I were you I'd sell. You've had
your money's worth out of the car over three years! Well done!

Firstly the ticking noise is nothing unsual - its the hydraulic tappets - all high mileage Xedos V6s do that to a certain extent. Nothing unusual - doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the engine. It should go once the car has warmed up.
Clearly you going to have to pay a few s for the timing belt and the other bits and pieces.
Unless you're planning to buying a more modern car, I'd suggest to keep the Mazda because if you spend 500 or so on another card, that car isn't exactly going to be in the best of health is it?
