BMW 525d oddity?

 Followed a 54-reg E60 525d earlier - and there was something "odd" hanging
down at the back, roughly central to the width, looked like it was probably
towards the front of the boot floor. It looked a lot like a cooling coil of
some kind, presumably for excess fuel being returned to the tank.

What surprised me was the sheer vulnerability of it - from my angle, it
looked like absolutely the lowest point on the car, just hanging down
vertically, no protection against obstacles in the road.

After having a look under a 75 CDT a couple of months back, I commented on
the vulnerability of the fuel cooler under that - it's positively bomb-
proof compared...
