I've occasionally considered how feasable it might be to modify the cruise
control on my Supra to be adaptive. The actual cruise control /appears/ to
just use a stepper motor to control the throttle - it has a second throttle
cable for this purpose.

Couple of radars and some trick software should do it :)

I question your apparent assumption (from the vagueness of your reply)
that the OP will be put off by the fact that only are expensive, nearly
new cars have the feature they're asking about.
HTH.

I doubt that this answer does help the OP in any way.

The following list is not authoritative, but should give you an idea.
Tracking down an ACC equipped model may not be easy - for some models
it has only become available very recently, or take-up rate was very
low:

The first European cars to have it fitted were, IIRC, the S-Class and
7-Series, from around (ish) late 1998. UK cars may well not have had
it until 1999 - but that is guesswork on my part.

Audi A6
Audi A8

BMW 3-Series (only on latest model)
BMW 5-Series
BMW 6-Series
BMW 7-Series

Mercedes CLK
Mercedes E-Class
Mercedes S-Class
Mercedes CLS
Mercedes SL
Mercedes CL
Maybach

Jaguar XJ-Series
Jaguar XK-Series

Nissan Primera T-Spec (Lidar based system - not radar)

Range Rover Sport

Renault Vel-Satis

VW Phaeton
VW Passat (new model only will reportedly have it available)

Sorry to be thick, but what is an adaptive cruise control? Does it sense
the distance between you and the car in front, or something?

Yup. Brakes to maintain distance if required and re-accelerates if clear
too!

Justin.

Every car I drive has this facility.

Without moving your feet? (Or hands on 'manual' cruise control ;-P)

Justin.

That's as I understand it.

The car in front slows, you slow. The car in front accelerates, you
accelerate, to your preset speed.

I'm not a fan of cruise in general, but this strikes me as the most
dangerous misuse of technology going. It's a positive encouragement for
drivers to sit with their brains in neutral and their cruise switched on on
busy motorways.

Well, no, but I feel that moving one's feet a little isn't a terribly
big deal.
