The actual cruise control /appears/ to just use a stepper motor to control the throttle - it has a second throttle cable for this purpose. Couple of radars and some trick software should do it

Tracking down an ACC equipped model may not be easy - for some models it has only become available very recently, or take-up rate was very low: The first European cars to have it fitted were, IIRC, the S-Class and 7-Series, from around (ish) late 1998. UK cars may well not have had it until 1999 - but that is guesswork on my part. The car in front accelerates, you accelerate, to your preset speed. I'm not a fan of cruise in general, but this strikes me as the most dangerous misuse of technology going. It's a positive encouragement for drivers to sit with their brains in neutral and their cruise switched on on busy motorways.
