Renault Clio 1993 Oasis 1171cc - Identifying Engine?

Nicola 10 April 2005 23:22:03
 Hi,
I have recently bought the above car failry cheaply, however, the cylinder
head was busted so instead of getting it fixed I rang the local scrappy...he
put in a new engine from a 1.2 Clio from same year.
However, to add the changes to the V5 I need the engine number - and I can't
find it!
I searched Google Groups and saw that someone said it was on a metal plate
to the right of the exhaust - is this looking ontop of the engine or do you
need to be underneath the car?

Thanking you all in advance :)

Nicola

P.S How easy is it to change the clutch on this model - that is busted
aswell! I have the Haynes and a fairly competent home mechanic to help just
wondered if it was a particulary difficult job, things to watch for etc?
I see the clutch kit from GSF is £40 ish and the cable £9. A local garage
said he could do it for £200 -worth doing ourselves?

To be honest, I wouldn't bother with engine numbers - my last bike> > had a non-matched engine number (the original broke it's crankshaft)> > and the Golf has had a replacement. Neither had the V5 changed.>
And if I turned up to buy your bike and found a non matching engine number > I'd be walking away immediately>

If she cant find it - then lots of people probably couldnt either .

I was looking through the Haynes bible last night and it shows the place
where the engine number should be but it was too dark to go take a look last
night so I might try again this morning. The car is 12 years old at the
moment and I don't suppose I will be selling it on anytime soon so I suppose
it doesn't matter.
Plus, the old engine which was supposedly taken out had 147k on the clock
and the new engine had a lot less. I don't suppose that a prospective buyer
will believe me though anyway. So when I've 'finished' with the car it will
look as if it's done 200,000 miles ;-/
Anyone want to buy him?

No. :-)

But seriously, run it around for a good year or so at least so you get your
money's worth (I'm guessing you got it pretty cheap due to the knackered
head anyway), and when you do come to sell it, be honest about it, and let
sellers judge for themselves - if it's in good condition with not too many
dents etc., and a good runner, someone should buy it for half decent money.
Make sure you get the cambelt changed though (probably cost around £150)
with tensioners and water pump (if appropriate) as you don't know the
history of the replacement engine and it isn't worth taking a risk.

Perhaps, but 99% of people wouldn't. I might expect them to be able to
explain it/provide reciepts etc, but it wouldn't necessarily put me off.
