RIP Rover

?????????? 16 April 2005 14:10:49
OK, build quality, management and employment relations aside....

It is a shame to see the end of a uk-based industry that came out with what
I think were fantastic designs:-

Mini - not much more to add to the Alec Issigonis masterpiece (and my first
car)
Rover P6 - maybe our answer to Mercedes at the time?
MGB - would look good even today
Triumph Stag - classy roadster
Rover SD1 - stunning design at the time (1977)
Metro - could never replace the Mini but still a creditable small car
Rover 75 - it looks British and is worthy of the badge

i think the above (and many others) are testament to a fantastic history of
design in automobiles.

it would be a crime for such talent to go to waste.

just think how it could have all been so different...........

I had an early Mini in the 1960s, the build quality of the engine,
transmission and body were crap.
I had an MGB GT, the double skinned front wings rusted through from the
inside.
I remember the Metro when it first came out, the early models were
starting to rust after only 3 months.
They weren't as bad as the Alfa Romeo Alfasud though, those cars were
often written off with corrosion after about a year.
Regards Mike.

i don't doubt what you say. sadly, that is why i had to qualify my post....

imagine those designs with decent build quality......

i know the alfasud was a bit ropey. also, i think the lancia brand was
withdrawn from the uk market due to similar rust and quality issues
