LPG transfer pumps?

Jayc001 4 May 2005 15:00:51
My boat runs on LPG and I'm getting fed up running it back and forth to the
nearest LPG station to fill her up.

I have seen websites where people said you can pump LPG from 47KG
bottles.

This would make sense to me as I could have one delivered to me each
weekend and just pump that into the boat. Surely as its not a road vehicle
I would not be doing anything wrong.

Anyideas where I can lay my hands on said pump?

erm... one or another of the suppliers who posts here from time to time has
'em. The trick is in having the right adapters (for the bottle end,
especially) and the correct high-pressure hoses (SWP needs to be about 15
bar, or thereabouts)

On a par with running on red diesel. If that's illegal on a boat then so
is running on LPG on which you have not paid the correct level of duty.
Of course there's actually no such thing as red LPG so how anyone would
know you used it for engine fuel rather than say cooking or heating, I
really don't know.

Can you use the vapour hose that is usually used to make pig tails
that link several bottles to one regulator for liquid?

I didn't think it was illegal to run red in a boat. AFAIK, the duty on the
fuel is for road use.

even so, you could always pay the duty on the 47Kg of gas.

A vapour hose which runs at tank pressure will, I assume, have a suitable
pressure rating. Of course, you want liquid gas, which means
almost-inverting the bottle. It's a wise idea not to invert it completely;
the bottles tend to accumulate crap in the bottom; if you put it upside
down, the said crap ends up in your fuel system. somewhere around 45
degrees would probably work, so that the lowest point isn't by the valve.

Not illegal at the moment, but may be set to change

Why not simply use liquid offtake bottles directly on the boat?

Have to shop around to get 47Kg (94L) cylinder of propane cheaper than
autogas. It's seems it's very easy to get ripped off.

April UK average price was 39.1p/L, supermarkets was 34.5p/L
At 40p/L car LPG will be £37.60, at 35p/L it will be £32.90.

47Kg Refils on the web seem to be around £40-£50 (no they haven't
stuck the £15 bottle rent on the price).

£66.57 rip U off co uk
http://www.adamsgas.co.uk/Products.aspx?id=82&CatId=83
£48.75 (extortion of boaters R us)
http://www.selby-boat-centre.co.uk/servicestation.php?service=gas
£45
http://www.flogas.co.uk/main/protected/catalogue/list_products.serv?hier_alias=urn:flogas.com:hierarchy/products

These are cheaper.
£32.55
http://www.industrial-supplies.org.uk/calor_gas_bottles/47kg_propane_gas_bottles.htm
£35
http://www.ekmpowershop.com/ekmps/shops/veligandu2001/index.asp?function=DISPLAYPRODUCT&productid=291
(but at £25 make sure you have a bottle to exchange)

Unless you have a bulk tank it's possibly cheaper to fill the car and
then transfer it to the boat or a cylinder. That's why some people
with LPG campers have a vapour off take for the fridge and stove.

I'm not trying to save money here I just don't want to have to tow the boat
on an hour trip to fill her up each day.
There is a propane supplier in my village who delivers gas for my BBQ so
I'd get him to drop off a 47KG bottle.

Running off bottles with liquid take off is not an option as the boat is
only 20ft and no where to put them.

I'm sure its perfectly legal for use in a boat as I can fill up legally
for 23P a litre at a lake close by (but thats still an hour round trip)
and in the harbour by me you can get red diesel for boats too (they used
to have LPG a few years back).

If anyone has the details for the guy on here who has them that would be
great.

As long as you pay the same rate of duty as you do when you fill up at
your normal filling point you are OK. I don't know of any regulation to
prevent you pumping the gas from a bottle into the tank on your boat.

Surely a more sensible solution would be to get one of the refillable
gas bottles used for forklift trucks (and similar) that can be
demounted, taken to the filling station and filled (this is legal if the
tank has an 80% shutoff valve).

Gaslow sell bottles but I think they are vapour take off only. There's a
Belgian company that sells liquid takeoff bottles.

Boats are permitted to use red diesel.

The boat uses 80L or so in a day which is not far off the weight of a 47LG
cylinder.

Not what I would call portable. Well not something I want to put in and
out the boot of my car.
