Flashlube causes sticky valves?

Dave Griffs 16 April 2005 00:23:15
Had the escort with the zetec engine converted, runs very well, except for
one problem. A couple of days after the conversion, the car always runs
rough for the first mile after a cold start, whether running on petrol or
LPG.
Since I bought the car 4 years ago, I had noticed this fault if the car was
ever left for more than a few days, altough the fault cleared in after
100-200 yrds, not a mile! I did some research & put this down to the common
sticky valve problem early zetecs have, due to the earlier engines not
having carbon cutters on the valves/guides, which allows gum & carbon to
build up on the stems. Regular oil changes with ford recommended 5/30 with a
engine flush seemed to help before the conversion.
When I had the car converted, I had this in mind so fitted a flashlube kit,
as flashlube claims to reduce the problem of sticky valves. Now after doing
some research, I found that flashlube is potassium based, which can cause
valve sticking at very low operating temperatures, see
http://carsandfuels.homestead.com/theysay.html.
I am going to disconnect the flashlube for a few days to see if the problem
disappears.
BTW the sticky valve problem with zetecs is not connected to the soft valve
problem they have, I have since found that this is on the later engines, so
maybe I didn't need flashlube anyway?
Any comments, ideas or experiences would be appreciated.

Thanks

Dave
