 In the big truck world, you can break springs like that by having frozen
shackle a/o eye bushings.
My Ccab front spring broke about like that.

 That makes sense, although come to think of it at least one of those
spring ends is hanging down so it couldn't very well have been frozen.

As to thinking about a cross country trip.. ALWAYS! <G>

 Looks like a case of metal fatigue to me. I don't think that rear
springs are available for the late model trucks.

My T-Cab had weak springs when I put it back on the the road in 1997 and
is had four replacement leaves installed including one that ran the full
length of the mainspring.

 I would LOVE to drive to Spokane in August, preferably by way of
Fairbanks, but unless something really bizarre happens (like Publishers
Clearing House), I don't have the time or money for a cross country trip
that serious.

The beach, the mountains, maybe West Virginia, Tennessee or even
Florida, a MAJOR road trip will have to wait.
