Gulp (NO pic), with new question

Jeff DeWitt 8 May 2005 22:02:17
I've noticed the past week or so it seemed like my truck was a little
squeaker than usual, but it's a 46 year old truck and I've recently
fixed an exhaust leak so I didn't think that much about it. Today I was
doing some tinkering, including bleeding the brakes, and I was under the
back of the truck.

While I was back there I noticed a wide piece of metal hanging down,
this first thought was that it was a hanger from the old exhaust system,
but then I noticed the leaf spring next to it... and the rear of the
spring wasn't connected to anything!

Both rear leaf springs had snapped off near the rear mount, and they
were resting on the rear fender supports.

Anyone have any idea what might have caused this? I don't abuse this
truck, although I sure do drive it, and I haven't carried any heavy
loads. Obviously this isn't exactly safe, what are the chances it could
happen to the front springs?

Anyone have any deals on some rear springs for a Champ?

How about the PN's for these? Seems like I've seen SASCO advertise them
lately but no I can't find the ad and they don't show up on the website.

I think that the only springs that are still available are for some of
the front spring applications. 7 leaf units come to mind. Charlie Veit
should know more about the options.

Everything is available for a price. I just got some new rears for my
'55 coupe, although they do not appear original (they use different
bushings than stock and they use the late style "dots" rather than the
full length leaf insulators) hopefully they will work (can't wait for
the weekend...)

You might want to call SASCO and if they don't have them see if they can
have them made (I bought these through SASCO...)

I sent notes to both Eaton Spring and SASCO, Eaton had (or could make) a
set of springs for about $450, SASCO had them in stock for $126 each.

Needless to say I ordered a pair from SASCO!

Now once they get here I get the fun of putting them in!

JT, according to Dennis at SASCO, while the earlier springs are no
longer in stock the 63-63 springs are available, and are the factory
replacements for the earlier trucks.
