Headliners again.

Robert Black 8 May 2005 02:59:38
I asked about C /K's the other day but now I really have a mess with the old
rotten headliner in my 62 Lark hardtop. It had holes before but over the
winter the rear part fell into the back seat.
Do you have to take out any glass to do a Lark?
Ill have to get new windlace too,and it should have carpet.I re-did the
seats,but the rest is original.

Robert, you CAN replace the headliner without removing the windows by
"cheating"; carefuly cutting and tucking it under the window rubber. I
have done it before but you really should do the windows to do it right.
If the headliner is shot, chances are you need new window rubber anyway.
The headliner in my 62 Daytona was "cheated" in years ago but is due again
due to a mouse that got it while it sat in a barn for years before I bought
it.

At least with mine the mouse got the headliner right above the passenger
visor. A slightly oversize CD holder clipped to the visor covers it
up...as long as you don't put the visor down...

I put a cloth headliner in my '62 two door sedan. It came from J.C.
Whitney. I did not pull the glass, but did the cheat and tuck method.
It didn't look that great when I was done, as it was drooping in spots.
To cure it, I put two hot plates in the car with pans of water. After
steaming the whole interior, it shrunk into place when dry and looked
great.
I went with the cloth type, because I was SO TIRED of having Studebaker
headliners fill up with air and drop down on my head. The seams blew
out the last time it filled up and dropped down, which is why I had to
change it. KK

If the car is a "keeper" pull the glass, front & back, and replace
windlace complete. You'll find needed help here on the install,
specifically: with NORS weatherseals around that big glass....use
heavy sealer inside and around the window. On the windlace...sew an
additional 1-inch piece along the entire length to get it to stay in
the door opening.
