My 99 GLS has the same problem. Apparently it's the chrome peeling
caused by salt buildup and from what I'm told, it's pretty common. It's
possible to have them re-chromed (I've been quoted about $200CAD/rim
locally) which is cheaper than replacing them completely (from
$800CAD/rim from GM.) I'd keep an eye on it if I were you. If it
starts to affect the sides if the rims where the tire seal is then you
can suddenly lose tire pressure for what appears to be no valid reason.
If you can get the extended warranty to cover it all the better but I
doubt they will (mine didn't.)
