Galant 96: more questions on brakes and clutch

Nplus 8 May 2005 07:24:07
Well..... I went to some mechanic who did not manage to remove
brake drums. He was banging with hammer saying "they should go off"
but they did not
Is there some special tool for this ?

And also please advise when to replace brake and clutch fluid.
The original service manual does not say a word how often

TIA

Is that a true drum brake or a disc/drum combo? Mitsu uses a "disk on drum"
for the rear for thier higher end models. They have rear calipers and a drum
like housing in the rotor for the parking brake. On those there is a rubber
cap that acesses the adjustment for the parking brake. You sometimes have to
loosen the brake with a screwdriver (Turn down?) to get the rotor off.

If it is a true rear drum, any mechanic should know how to do this as they
are standard American made brakes (Japs don't make drums).

As for the fluids, I change mine 1/yr or every brake job if I'm lazy. It's
really pretty easy to do and extends the life of the master/slave cylinders.
I do have speed bleeders in, so it's even easier for me.

 It is true drum brake.
You scared me about fluid. I did not change it in years.
Do you change also clutch fluid once a year or you have automatic ?

I have a 3000GT/VR4. They didn't make twin turbos with automatics. I do the
fluid when I'm bored and looking for something to do on the car. It's so
easy and cheap, why not? Braking is pretty important to me on my fun car,
but not on my daily driver. I bet my Chevy Saturn has the original brake
fluid in it. Sure I will have to rebuild the brake cylinder soon, but it's a
Chevy. Who cares?
