Engine Surge/Hesitate

When in gear, during accleration, around 2500-3500 RPMs the engine
begins to surge and hesitate. I took the car to an independant
mechanic and they hooked my car up to their computer, when doing so,
my car proceded to reset their computer. They made mutilple attempts
to rescan my cars computer with theirs, but it did the same thing each
time. From the mechanics knowledge of cars he said that he has it
narrrowed down to either the plugs, plug wires, or coil pack. I
already replaced the fuel regulator, fuel filter, air filter, oil
filter + change. One thing that was also noticed when I replaced the
air filter, the Air Screen in the air intake was dameged and bent up.
He said that it would be part of the problem but not entirely. Any
ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Based on the symptoms you describe there could be a blockage in the
air intake system, essentially strangling the engine for air. I'd
make sure it is clear all the way up to the throttle body. Could some
critter have tried to build a nest in the air intake? Happened on my
wife's Camry.
On another note, how many miles on the car? Have the plugs and wires
ever been changed?
FWIW
YMMV

I have the air intake taken apart all the way up to the throttle body.
The inside of the throttle body appears clean and normal as far as I
can tell.
The weirdest thing is that the surging and hesitation only occurs
during the 2500-3500 RPM range.
As far as I know, in the 81,000 miles that the car has driven, the
plugs, wires, or coil pack haven’t been changed. So I figure that I
should go ahead and get those changed, but if the problem occurs
somewhere else I would like to fix that problem first.
