 Thanks Dwain, I had totally forgotten about Joe and the Model Garage.
That is from back in the days when Popular Science was a great magazine,
not the sanitized, PC piece of trash it has sadly turned into.

 The one that sticks in my mind was when he had to start a vehicle nosed
into a garage.
The jumpers were too short to reach the batteries, so he put them in
series and used bumber-to-bumper contact as a ground return.
Now it seems weird that he didn't have a loose battery set up for such
an occasion. (Maybe the plot line involved just being in his car.)

when I was a kid, someone gave me a bunch of magazines with his model
garage
articles

and the college at Natchitoches, Louisiana has them bound by 6 months
issuers, wayyy back to the 1930's..... I read some from around early 40's,
and they had Gus back then, also
