Not so cold AC, sorta OT

Stude-Ious 28 April 2005 19:14:20
My off-brand '89 'burb is only blowing moderately cool air from it's AC.
Anyone know any sources for recharging the system? Up here (in Ontario,
Canada) they've outlawed the old style coolant, and a conversion is big
bucks!

OK, here is my experience. You'll have people tell you it can't be
done, but I've done it three times. Go to a flaps (down here it's Auto
Zone or Checker), buy the conversion kit (about $45 American), rent or
borrow a vacuum pump. Convert the fittings with the kit, hook up the
pump, run for 24 hours. Drop in R134A and lubricant. You'll get told
the lubricants are not compatible. Maybe, but I've never had a problem.
Use some cheap R-134A gauges, fill the system, voila! Cold air, not
R-12. You are not supposed to vent R-12 to the atmosphere here in
America (the rest of the third world, OK), I'm sure Canada is the same.
Not a problem for me, all the systems were empty from prior leakage.
The nay sayers tell you the seals are different, I don't know, never
changed them. There is a '62 GT running around that I converted at
least 3 to 4 years ago. Still cold by Arizona standards. That is only
my experience, your's might be different. KM

I use Freeze 12, it's compatible with the ester oil and is a replacement
for R12. $99 for 12 cans, even cheaper than 134a.

Problem with R134 conversions is the size of the condenser.
Since R134 is only a percentage as efficient as R12 the condenser ends up
being undersized.
If your original condenser is big enough, you can get away with it just
fine.
But if it isn't, then you will get a cold blast and then a slow warm up and
then it will blow only cool and not cold....
and the compressor will do a slow cook.
Any old o-rings in the system (and R12 rated nylon piston seals...Sanden)
could end up getting hurt, and then the conversion money will be re-spent to
do a R134 conversion properly.
Ask me how I know....
Jeff (and I had to listen to the 'I told you so' a dozenteen times from my
a/c shop owner) Rice

R12 is a big smuggling item coming across from Mexico, but I understand
that more of it goes through Texas than California.

If you can find a fridge (or other device) using R12 being scrapped
out, I think a professional can legally remove it and put in your car.

Check with the guys there in that trade, and maybe with some in a
nearby US state, if you have no joy from the locals.

Scroll down the Freeze-12 page to the bottom. They have a product called
"Glacier Gold" just for you Canucks. Ships from a point within Canada -
No Customs hassle.

Not being in Ontario, but I am in Canada.
Try an agricultural or tractor supply shop. The sell a lot of
propane/isobutane blend here. Seems to stay in the A/C units of
combines, etc. better than the Freon. I've used it in my suburban, and
it cools just fine. It's actually a more efficient refrigerant than
R12.

Drawback: it's combustible. Hell, so is fuel. If you smoke, you're
gonna die anyway.

Thanks to all; I've contacted the Freeze12/Glacier-Gold guys re: getting
some here; will also stop by my local ag dealer this morning to see what
they have. Boy, you guys are great, this NG is a great resource!

Update; Thanks for the help. Went to my buddy's ag dealership, he gave me a
"RED TEK 12a" recharge kit; compatable with R12 or R134A systems, comes
with can of sealant, 2 cans of refrigerant, fittings and hose. He advised
me not to install it until the outside temp is up to 70 or 75 degrees.

Must be a Canadian thing, I worked at the Midwest's largest John Deere
dealership for two years in high school and did things like recharge A/C
units in tractors and combines. This was back in the early 1980's and all I
ever remember is using R-12 to recharge these systems.
