65 Rear Brake Part No ? Availability

Jim D 27 April 2005 05:29:06
A couple of weeks I posted about helping a guy get a 65 6 cyl Stude back on
the road. While being towed to his house the rear shoe on one side was
rusted/stuck to the drum, and the star wheel adjuster and the 2 wire self
adjusting brake rods got mangled. He has new cylinders and shoes. People
from the NG said they were available at my local FLAPS, and yes indeed the
local NAPA store had the Star Wheel Adjuster in stock (Made in China, but I
was glad to find it), but they, and the other FLAPS that has been in
business for many years and still has all the old 60's era paper catalogs
and knows old parts/cars, do not have, and cannot get those rods, and I was
told that no "self adjusting rebuild kit" is available. No junkyards near me
(just outside of Boston) have ANY Studes left in them.

I cannot find the rods on the SASCO site, but maybe if I had the parts
numbers they would show up in their search feature that uses parts numbers.
I left my copy of the Stude repair manual "Brick" with my friend in case he
needed it. Does anyone have the parts numbers or know where I can get him
those rods...only the rods for one side are needed.

By the way, I went into a local key and lock store that has been around for
ages and is run by a guy in his early 80's, and gave him the keys to my 66
Commander, and asked if he could make copies (the ignition is an easily
found key that I think was used in Chryslers, but the trunk key was not
available at any place I went to, and I went to a few lock places, and
SASCO wants $9.00 or $10.00 for a set of blank ignition and trunk keys).
The Old fellow said, no problem, and cut me 2 keys, and even used a
micrometer to check them against the originals. $1.40 each, all cut to fit
my car. Gotta love these businesses that have been there forever run by
knowledgeable old guys. He was genuinely surprised that the other key
stores did not have the key blanks for the trunk, but the box he took the
blanks out of looked old, and is probably stock he ordered in the 60's or
70's.

there IS 'some' 66's that used an odd blank, and the factory is
no longer making it.. ILCO 66 SS and SP, or maybe 64 SS and SP..

those ARE rare.. I bought a box of the secondary once long ago,
they were available then, and placed an order for a box of the
ignition..
10 months later came a note-NLA, and not going to be made.
otherwise, NON logod blanks are available for the rest.

SASCO lists them at $2.10 ea.

You only need 1-each since you're only doing one side (I'd buy extras)
