'48 wheels needed

TomNoller 26 April 2005 18:49:04
A buddy of mine here in western Washington has a '48 SLC and needs two
wheels. He says the old ones are too rusty to trust on a long drive and I
can't remember if it's a Champion or Commander, if that would make a
difference. He's Don Andersen at djandersen(at)juno.com and thanks, gang!

Makes a BIG difference. Champion wheels are skinny and four-lug. Commander
are five lug and six-inch wide.

Thanks Paul. I'll find out which one it is.

It's the Commander. If anyone could spare to sell two decent wheels for
his 5-lug '48, it's djandersen(at)juno.com and thanks!

Are they the same as 55-56, or different?

 N8,
51-66 are different bolt pattern(4.5 on 5)

The pre-1951 Commander wheels are same as 15" x 5 on 5 wheels used on
2Rs and later trucks.

At some point, the truck wheels changed to accommodate tubeless tires.
Anyone know when that was and how to tell the difference between tubeless
and tube-type wheels? I think that all of the 16 inch wheels (5 on 5 bolt
circle) for the 1/2 ton trucks were 4.5" wide. Were the pre-'51 Commander
wheels really wider? What size tires were used on the cars? As I remember,
Ford Stoecker runs LT215-85/R16 on his '35 Commander with the same 4.5" wide
wheels. These are the tallest, skinniest radials that will fit the 16 inch
rims.

stiff ride)
'65 Wagonaire (6.0 wide Ford-type wheels running P205-75/R15 radials - love
'em)
