Adventure Taking Place

Dave's Place 24 April 2005 22:40:10
There is quite an adventure going on over in the SDC forum! I'll not steal
their thunder, because this adventure came into being, and has developed to
this point on that turf. Makes for good reading, and makes ol' Harry's trip
look like a cake walk!

It's a really long thread, up to four pages now. However, you can jump
through it easily, if you don't have time to read the whole thread. Bottom
line, the old Stude and it's passengers should be into Oklahoma about now,
east bound and down!

Follow the excitement here:

Everyone should read every post on this thread.
Imagine the money that would have gone to paint and fixing stuff it this rig
had been checked out for a week before the trip (or shipped).
Now, I can get all romantic about a road trip too, but almost all of his
pain is/was avoidable.
Quaint yes, fiscal? No way.
If he had driven this to the first Stude guy and spent a week sorting
through stuff, this trip might have been one for the ages.
As it is, it is a trip that shows how important our impromptu computer age
network really is.
Preparation is key. Knowing your equipment is key.
Neither was really addressed with this trip.
Now the needed become the hero's, and that is great, but was it necessary?
Sort of like leaving port with a new boat without a shakedown cruise.
Some will say that's romantic, but the Coast Guard can fill the library with
saves (and losses) that were totally avoidable.
Does this sound like a rant?
No, but it points out the need to do your homework before you plunge over
the waterfall.
I'll betcha there's gonna be 2 grand spent on the trip that could have been
spent on the car.
Nostalgia is nice, but reality costs bucks...

Points well taken, Jeff. However, I think Justin is having a good time. He
obviously does not have to worry about being at work any time soon, and is
seeing the country and meeting nice folks... his way. While the car was not
what he expected, he did not depart on this voyage blindfolded. He knew
there could be problems along the way, and went for it.

I almost envy him, in that the set-backs don't seem to upset him, he just
adjusts, makes new plans, and carries on. This, in contrast to fretting at
every hic-up like I do. <G> My trip to Charlotte was supposed to be a
"pleasure" trip, all the way, and I allowed the small problems to bug me
more than I should have. No, I did not HAVE to be in Charlotte by any
certain time, but I had expectations, and when they weren't met, it bugged
me. On the other side of the coin, those frustrating issues allowed me once
more to know just how good my friends are, and how many of them I have.
Justin is meeting some new, very good friends that he would not have met
otherwise. That's neat!

To just set out and go, take what each day hands you, and not fret over
it... that is also neat. Sure, Justin would have rather made it across the
nation just buying gas and maybe some oil, but he knew that the odds were
against that happening... and did it anyway. That's cool, (and takes guts)
IMHO.

but question the wisdom of the adventure as planned.

Wisdom? See, that's just no fun, at all! <G>

Some day, when I grow up, I'm going to do something really stupid and
irresponsible, just because I'm so tired of being such a straight
rrow. -¿Ö

Drive a Studebaker a few miles home that does not have brakes, that gets
your attention.

I may just cut a brake line, and see for myself there, big boy. <G>

Wait... I don't have to do that... I'll just take another run at the creek
with the 9N. It hasn't had brakes in years!

well, my 9N is pretty tough, but I found out with that front mounted
distributor its not good to have a leaky radiator <G> Also I've
started several grass fires brush hogging with that low exaust
manifold. Not a bad tractor, but I still perfer my Farmall H with
loader if both are running at the same time(rare occurance).

If I ever mention my "engine lift" here on the newsgroup, I'm referring
to my loader tractor. lol
