Didn't the 924 ordinarily come with a Rambler engine?

Not quite. It was an Audi engine (which shared a lot of genes with the
original watercooled VW I-4) that was used in the 924 and I believe was
also used in some AMC models in the early 70s.

It actually wouldn't be a hard swap to put a VW engine in a 924... but
why? and a Diesel...?

 This isn't the first Porsche Diesel I've seen. Of course, the other one was
a tractor (the farming kind, a Junior)
Jim Bartley on PEI--now, with common rail technology or whatever it is
